Brookwood Fall Fest Returns Sept. 10-12 With 40+ Local Vendors, Fall Shopping and a Bigger Purpose
For families across Katy, Fulshear, Brookshire and West Houston, a trip to The Brookwood Community has long been about more than what comes home in a shopping bag.
That will be especially true Sept. 10-12, when Brookwood Fall Fest fills the Brookwood Gift & Garden Center and Café with more than 40 local vendors, seasonal plants, handcrafted goods, food and a wine and beer garden. The three-day event runs from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 1502 FM 1489 in Brookshire.
Visitors can come looking for fall décor, jewelry or an early Christmas gift, stay for lunch, wander through the garden center and leave knowing the money spent there helps support meaningful work and opportunities for adults with disabilities.
That connection between commerce and purpose is what makes Fall Fest distinctly Brookwood.
More Than 40 Local Vendors Coming to Brookwood Fall Fest
For shoppers, Fall Fest brings together a wide assortment of local makers and small businesses in one place, with handcrafted gifts, seasonal décor and one-of-a-kind finds spread throughout the event.
Among this year's vendors is Inspirational Arts by Kelly Hansen, whose original designs use hand-printed Bible verses to create inspirational words. Her collection includes prints, note cards, tote bags and Resting on His Word pillowcases.
Works of Love by Cynthia will bring another kind of handcrafted detail to the festival. The Houston-area jewelry artist creates pieces incorporating stones, crystals, fossils, pendants and other materials, and her Etsy shop has recorded more than 1,500 sales.
Other announced vendors include A Touch of Elegance, Dandelion Caverns Woodworking, Katyfarm Workshop and The Great Texas Pecan Candy Co.
For Brookwood, however, the local vendor market is only part of the day.
Guests can also browse the Brookwood Gift & Garden Center for Citizen-made ceramics, home accents, gifts and seasonal items, along with fall plants and florals grown through Brookwood's horticulture program.
Fall Plants With a Brookwood Connection
The garden center is a substantial operation in its own right.
Brookwood says approximately 210,000 plants are grown each year across 49 production greenhouses, with more than 100 Brookwood Citizens participating in the horticulture program. Citizens help seed, water, prune and prepare plants as part of Brookwood's vocational model, which matches work assignments with individual interests, strengths and abilities.
That means the fall flowers, herbs, perennials and other plants shoppers encounter are also tied directly to Brookwood's larger mission.
The same is true inside the gift shop. Brookwood says its products may pass through the hands of multiple Citizens during the creation process, with different individuals contributing according to their skills. Revenue from shopping helps underwrite Brookwood's programs and provides meaningful work for the adults it serves.
During Fall Fest, visitors will find the garden center stocked for the season, making the event particularly timely for Houston-area residents looking for fall plants, seasonal flowers and Texas garden ideas as summer begins giving way to fall.
Make Time for Lunch at The Brookwood Café
Fall Fest is designed to be more of a day trip than a quick market stop.
The Brookwood Café will serve lunch during the festival, with the event schedule listing Café service from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. A Coffee Cart will also offer drinks, snacks and box lunches, while guests can stop at the Wine Bar in the Garden while shopping.
As part of Brookwood's social-enterprise model, The Café sits alongside the Gift & Garden Center, making it possible for visitors to shop, eat and explore the campus during the same visit. Outside special events, Brookwood lists regular Café hours as Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with reservations recommended.
The Café has become a destination in its own right, earning multiple dining recognitions over the years — including OpenTable Diners’ Choice honors — and giving visitors another reason to make a trip to Brookwood well beyond special events.
The Story Behind The Brookwood Community
The roots of The Brookwood Community reach back more than four decades.
Brookwood's day program began in 1983, and its first residential Citizens joined in 1985. The organization grew from founder Yvonne Tuttle Streit's search for meaningful opportunities for her daughter, Vicki, and other adults with disabilities.
Today, the nonprofit describes itself as a residential and vocational community where adults with disabilities — whom Brookwood calls Citizens — can work, build friendships and participate in community life. Its main Brookshire campus spans approximately 485 acres, with more than 100 residential Citizens living on campus and additional Citizens commuting to its vocational programs. Brookwood also operates satellite locations in Richmond and The Woodlands.
Brookwood was developed around the belief that meaningful work matters. Rather than relying on government funding, the organization says its operations are supported through tuition, enterprise revenue and donations, with scholarship assistance available. Its enterprises give Citizens opportunities in areas including horticulture, retail and the creation of products sold through Brookwood's shops.
Its stated vision is to change the way the world thinks about adults with disabilities.
Fall Fest puts that mission in a particularly visible setting: local businesses selling beside Citizen-made products, customers eating at the Café and shoppers carrying plants home from greenhouses where Brookwood Citizens work throughout the year.
