Houston Police Capture Violent Suspect in Copperfield Area After Crime Spree
In the early hours of Sunday, February 2, Houston police officers shot and critically wounded an armed suspect at 8630 Easton Commons Drive in the Copperfield area following a string of violent crimes.
According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), the situation unfolded around 3 a.m. after officers responded to a report of an aggravated robbery at 9232 Richmond Avenue. Investigators revealed that a male suspect stole a vehicle at gunpoint from a female victim before committing another armed robbery at a nearby convenience store. Officers from the Northwest and Midwest Patrol Divisions tracked the stolen vehicle to an apartment complex at 8630 Easton Commons Drive, where the suspect fled on foot and fired multiple shots at police. In response, five HPD officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. No officers were injured, and paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital in critical condition.
Assistant Chief James Skelton of the Houston Police Department emphasized the dangers officers face while protecting the community. “This was an individual who was determined to commit violent crimes, and our officers responded swiftly to prevent further harm,” Skelton stated. “The suspect not only stole a vehicle but also terrorized a convenience store and then fired at officers. We are grateful that none of our officers were injured.”

As per HPD policy, all involved officers have been placed on administrative duty, and body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days.
Skelton reiterated HPD’s commitment to community safety, urging vigilance in the face of rising crime. “Over the past two days, we’ve seen multiple incidents where suspects have fired at officers,” he said. “These officers are guardians of the community, working tirelessly to protect citizens. If you engage in criminal activity, we will find you and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”

What to Do If You Are the Victim of a Carjacking
In light of the recent crime involving vehicle theft, law enforcement officials emphasize the importance of knowing how to react if confronted by a carjacker. If you are ever in this dangerous situation, consider the following safety measures:
-
Stay Calm and Compliant: Your life is more valuable than your vehicle. Avoid sudden movements and follow the carjacker’s instructions to minimize risk.
-
Do Not Argue or Resist: Most carjackings occur quickly, and resistance can escalate the situation. Hand over the keys if demanded.
-
Create Distance as Soon as Possible: Once the suspect takes your vehicle, move away from the area to avoid further harm.
-
Take Mental Notes: Try to remember the suspect’s appearance, clothing, and any unique details about their vehicle or direction of travel.
-
Call 911 Immediately: Report the incident to law enforcement as soon as you are in a safe location.
-
Utilize Tracking Technology: If your vehicle is equipped with GPS tracking, notify authorities so they can attempt to recover it.
“Criminals do not care about the harm they cause,” Skelton noted. “We need residents to stay alert, work together, and support law enforcement efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe.”
As authorities continue their investigation, Copperfield residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. Officials stress that community safety is a shared priority, and law enforcement remains committed to protecting residents and addressing criminal activity.
