A phone call from someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy can get a person’s attention quickly — especially when the caller already seems to know who they are.
That sense of urgency is exactly what scammers are counting on in a scheme currently targeting Harris County residents. A Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigator recently flagged a high volume of calls in which fraudsters impersonate HCSO deputies, tell residents they have an active arrest warrant and demand immediate payment to avoid being arrested.
For families in Heritage Park West, the most important thing to know is simple: HCSO says it will never demand cash or bail payments over the phone.
Why These Harris County Scam Calls Can Sound Convincing
These are not always vague calls from someone who knows little about the person answering the phone.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office scam alert, callers may use real personal information, fake badge numbers and counterfeit documents to make their story seem legitimate.
The fraudster may claim there is a warrant for the resident’s arrest and create pressure to act immediately. An HCSO investigator said scammers have also been demanding payment through Cash App or other electronic payment platforms under the threat that the resident could otherwise be arrested.
That combination — a law enforcement identity, personal information and a threat of immediate consequences — can make the call feel official. But residents should not let the caller’s urgency make the decision for them.

If a caller says an arrest can be prevented by sending money immediately, that is a major warning sign.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office advises victims to contact their bank and report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Depending on the payment method, contacting the financial institution or payment provider promptly may also help residents learn what options are available for addressing the transaction.
Residents should also save any information connected with the call, including the phone number, voicemail, text messages, payment requests or documents the scammer sent.
