Harris County Public Library's Dino-Themed Summer Reading Program Brings Reading Adventures to Families in Bear Creek
Summer break is almost here, and for families in Bear Creek, Harris County Public Library is once again turning reading into a community-wide adventure.
Beginning June 1, Harris County Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program invites residents of all ages to participate in a summer filled with books, activities, prizes and dinosaur-themed events designed to keep children learning while school is out. This year’s theme — “HCPL’s Summer Reading is Dino-Mite!” — encourages readers to “dig into tales of dinosaurs and exploration” while helping the county reach an ambitious community goal of 7 million minutes read by Aug. 1.
For many local families, the program offers more than just entertainment. Summer reading programs are widely recognized for helping children maintain literacy skills during the school break while also creating meaningful family routines around reading, learning and discovery.
A Free Summer Activity for All Ages in Harris County
One of the biggest advantages of the Harris County Public Library Summer Reading Program is accessibility. Participation is completely free, and residents do not need a library card to join the program or attend events.
The program is open to all age groups, including:
- Early Literacy (ages 0-4)
- Kids (ages 5-11)
- Teens (ages 12-17)
- Adults (18+)
Early registration opens May 18, with the official program running from June 1 through Aug. 1.
Participants can sign up through Beanstack, the online reading tracker used by HCPL. Families who participated last year can continue using their existing accounts, and the Beanstack Tracker app is also available for both iOS and Android devices, making it easier for busy parents and readers to log progress throughout the summer.
Readers can earn points by:
- Reading books
- Logging reading minutes
- Completing activities
- Writing book reviews
The system rewards participation in multiple ways:
- 1 book = 10 points
- 30 minutes of reading = 10 points
- 1 activity = 5 points
- 1 review = 5 points
As readers reach milestones, they can earn prizes, including free books and special prize opportunities available while supplies last.
Why Summer Reading Matters for Families
Educators and literacy experts have long emphasized the importance of summer reading for children and teens. HCPL notes that students who continue reading during the summer often spend less time relearning skills once school resumes in the fall.
Even reading as little as 10 minutes per day can help strengthen language development and comprehension skills for younger readers.
For parents in Bear Creek, the program also creates a structured, screen-free activity that encourages children to stay engaged academically while still enjoying the freedom of summer break.
The library’s family-friendly events and activities can also help motivate reluctant readers by making books feel interactive, rewarding and fun rather than mandatory.
Big Prizes Add Extra Excitement This Summer
In addition to books and milestone rewards, Harris County Public Library is offering several high-profile prize drawings this summer through partnerships with local organizations.

A Summer Tradition That Builds Community
Programs like HCPL’s Summer Reading Challenge continue to serve as an important reminder that libraries remain community gathering places — not just for books, but for learning, creativity and connection.
For many families across Harris County, summer reading has become an annual tradition that blends education with quality time, helping children build confidence while creating memories that can last well beyond summer break.
As the dinosaur-themed adventure begins, families in Bear Creek have an opportunity to turn reading into something exciting, rewarding and shared together.
