From Cypress to Healthcare AI: Dr. Nicholas Desai Joins Notable as Chief Medical Officer
For Cypress residents who watched Houston Methodist’s newest hospital rise along the U.S. 290 corridor, Dr. Nicholas Desai became one of the local faces behind its push to blend technology with hands-on patient care. Now, the physician executive who helped guide Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital from planning to opening is taking that experience into a national healthcare technology role.
Notable, a healthcare artificial intelligence company based in San Mateo, California, announced Sept. 14 that Desai has been named its Chief Medical Officer. He joins the company after more than two decades in healthcare and leadership roles that included clinical technology, hospital operations, quality, growth and financial performance.
The move carries a particular connection to Cypress. Desai most recently helped lead the development, opening and growth of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, where he served in executive roles including Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer. His Houston Methodist career also included service as the health system's Chief Medical Information Officer.
From Building a Cypress Hospital to Shaping Healthcare AI
Houston Methodist Cypress opened in March 2025 as the health system's ninth hospital, bringing a 100-bed acute-care facility to a rapidly growing part of northwest Houston. From the beginning, technology was not treated as an add-on. The hospital was designed around tools such as ambient intelligence, remote patient monitoring, virtual care and other technology intended to improve communication, workflow and the patient experience.
During a pre-opening tour with My Neighborhood News in 2025, Desai described the hospital as “phygital,” reflecting an effort to connect physical healthcare with digital tools.
“We live in a world between both the physical and digital—what we call ‘phygital.’ Our goal is to merge technology with healthcare innovation to truly transform how we deliver care to our patients, caregivers, and community,” Desai said at the time.
That philosophy could be seen throughout the new Cypress hospital, from technology-assisted patient rooms and virtual nursing to automated workflows and tools intended to reduce time spent on administrative work.
The emphasis, however, was not technology for technology's sake.
“Everything we designed here is meant to augment—not replace—our staff, allowing them to work at the highest level of functionality while maintaining the warmth of human touch,” Desai told My Neighborhood News before the hospital opened.
That experience is closely aligned with the job he is now taking on at Notable.
Notable Wants AI to Change the Work, Not Just Add Another Tool
Notable develops an AI platform aimed at automating administrative and operational work across healthcare systems. According to the company, its technology is deployed at more than 12,000 sites of care and is used for functions ranging from patient access and revenue cycle management to care operations.
The company describes its broader strategy as creating a “System of Work” in which AI agents and healthcare employees work across existing systems to move tasks from request through completion. The goal is to increase healthcare workforce capacity while reducing administrative work rather than simply layering more technology onto already complicated hospital operations.
For Desai, the distinction between having AI and actually making it useful appears to be central to his new role.
“The measure of AI will not be intelligence. It will be impact,” Desai said in Notable's announcement. “For a health system, that means whether patients get care sooner, whether teams have more capacity, and whether work gets completed reliably. Having led both enterprise technology and hospital operations, I know deployment is only the beginning. Joining Notable gives me the opportunity to help more organizations turn what technology makes possible into how they operate every day.”
As Chief Medical Officer, Desai will work with health system executives to identify areas where AI may have the greatest operational value, align clinical and administrative teams and develop workflows that can function within hospitals' existing staffing, infrastructure and budgets. His work will include patient access, care operations and workforce productivity while also helping guide development of Notable's platform.
Lessons From Houston Methodist Cypress
The approach is familiar to anyone who followed the creation of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital.
The hospital opened with technology incorporated throughout patient care and employee workflows, including smart patient rooms, remote monitoring and virtual nursing capabilities. Nursing leaders said at the time that one of the goals was to return more time to direct patient care.
“By integrating virtual nursing, automation, and AI-driven tools, we are giving our nurses back the time to do what they do best—provide compassionate, hands-on care to patients,” Houston Methodist Cypress Chief Nursing Officer Caroline Mascarenhas told My Neighborhood News ahead of the opening.
She also stressed that technology was only one part of the equation.
“Innovation in nursing isn’t just about technology—it’s about enhancing patient-centered care, reducing administrative burdens, and personalizing each patient’s experience,” Mascarenhas said.
Houston Methodist has continued expanding that technology-focused model. The Cypress campus uses advanced remote monitoring and other digital health tools, while the hospital itself is already growing to meet demand. In March 2026, Houston Methodist announced a $104 million expansion that will add 64 medical-surgical beds, 16 intensive care beds, six operating rooms, an additional endoscopy suite and an inpatient dialysis suite.
The expansion, announced only about a year after the hospital opened, also calls for approximately 145 additional clinical and support positions.
A Cypress Connection to a Larger Healthcare AI Conversation
Desai's move comes as hospitals across the country are working through a much larger question: where does artificial intelligence genuinely improve healthcare, and where does it simply create another system for physicians, nurses and employees to manage?
Notable CEO and co-founder Pranay Kapadia said Desai's background on both the technology and hospital operations sides of healthcare made him particularly suited to address that issue.
“More AI does not automatically mean more capacity or better margins,” Kapadia said. “Those gains require changing how work gets done. Nick has led clinical technology across a health system and taken direct responsibility for hospital operations. He understands what has to change, what cannot be compromised, and what it takes to bring an organization through that kind of transformation.”
For Cypress, Desai's appointment also provides an interesting next chapter in the story of a hospital built with many of those same questions in mind. What began locally as an effort to rethink the way technology fits into a hospital setting will now inform work involving health systems well beyond northwest Houston.
The connection is a reminder that some of the broader changes taking place in American healthcare are not happening only in research labs or Silicon Valley technology companies. In this case, part of that experience was built close to home, inside a hospital designed from the ground up in Cypress.
