Harris County Pets Offers Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Events in February
In recognition of Spay and Neuter Awareness Month and Responsible Pet Owners Month, Harris County Pets (HCP) is launching a series of low-cost spay and neuter events throughout February. As the open-admission animal shelter for unincorporated Harris County, HCP aims to reduce pet overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership by offering spay and neuter surgeries for $40 per pet at multiple locations. Depending on the provider, the type of animal, and its size, spay and neuter surgeries for pets cost an average of $75 to $200, according to The Empty the Shelter Project in Houston.
“At Harris County Pets, we are committed to promoting the health and safety of our communities by providing accessible spay and neuter services for pet owners,” said Corey Steele, Director of HCP and the Veterinary Public Health Division at Harris County Public Health (HCPH). “These events play a critical role in addressing the stray animal crisis in our community while supporting families who need these services for their companion pets. By participating in these low-cost spay and neuter programs, pet owners are helping to ensure the well-being of their pets and contributing to a healthier, safer environment for everyone.”
The events will be available to up to 250 pets in unincorporated Harris County, outside the Houston city limits. Licensed veterinarians will perform the procedures, ensuring quality care for each pet. To participate, pet owners must call 281-999-3191 to be placed on a service list and provide proof of residency within Harris County. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

Spay and neuter appointments will take place at Harris County Pets Clinic located at 612 Canino Road in Houston on February 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, and 27. Additional events will be hosted at Gene Green Dog Park on February 22 and at Laurel’s House mobile unit in HCP's parking lot on February 19, specifically for large dogs.
Alongside these in-person services, HCP and HCPH will host a free Responsible Pet Ownership Virtual Event on February 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. via Zoom. The session will cover topics such as the importance of spaying and neutering, safe rehoming practices, and common animal diseases. Community members interested in attending can register online at bit.ly/PetCare2025.
Spaying and neutering offer long-term benefits for both pets and the community. The Humane Society of the United States reports that altered pets tend to live longer, healthier lives, with lower risks of cancer and infections. The procedure can also help reduce behavioral issues such as aggression and roaming. On a broader scale, spay and neuter programs help control pet overpopulation, reducing the number of stray animals on the streets and easing overcrowding in shelters.

“These services are not just about preventing unwanted litters; they’re about improving the quality of life for pets and the people who care for them,” Steele said. “By making these procedures affordable, we’re helping more families keep their pets healthy while also addressing the larger issue of stray animals in our community.”
Residents who are unable to secure an appointment in February can find year-round low-cost spay and neuter services from partner organizations listed at CountyPets.com. For more information, call 281-999-3191.
