Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Urges Donations After Winter Storm Enzo Causes Critical Shortages
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is urgently calling on the community to replenish the blood supply following disruptions caused by a recent winter storm. Hazardous conditions led to the cancellation of multiple blood drives and a significant decline in donor turnout, creating a strain on resources needed to support local hospitals.
Blood Donations Save Lives
Every day, blood donations play a crucial role in patient care. They are essential for trauma victims, cancer patients, those undergoing surgeries, and individuals with chronic illnesses like sickle cell anemia. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, which serves 170 hospitals across a 26-county area—including the Texas Medical Center, the largest in the world—needs 1,000 blood donations daily to meet these life-saving demands.

How You Can Help
The Blood Center invites the community to take action in two ways:
-
Donate Blood: Each donation can save up to three lives. Find a convenient donation center or blood drive at giveblood.org.
-
Host a Blood Drive: Businesses, schools, places of worship and community organizations can organize blood drives to help meet local needs. Visit giveblood.org/hostablooddrive to learn more.
All blood types are needed, and healthy individuals are encouraged to donate. As a thank-you, donors between January 22–24 will receive points worth $20 toward an eGift card and a free A1c diabetes screening, which monitors long-term blood sugar levels.
The Impact of Your Support
For over 50 years, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has been committed to ensuring patients have access to safe and effective blood products. With the recent storm disrupting critical blood supplies, community support is more vital than ever.
