From Ocean Depths to Chocolate Dreams: Experience The Little Mermaid and Willy Wonka Live on Stage

September 13 2024

National Youth Theater (NYT) continues its 10th year anniversary with its fall productions of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka and Disney’s The Little Mermaid!

The delightful adventures of Charlie Bucket at Willy Wonka's enigmatic chocolate factory come to life in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl's whimsical tale. The production features enchanting songs from the 1971 film, which starred Gene Wilder, alongside new compositions by Leslie Bricusse (known for Jekyll & Hyde and Doctor Dolittle) and Anthony Newley.

Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka is a scrumdidilyumptious musical that promises to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. The story follows Charlie, a young boy from a humble background, who wins a golden ticket to tour Wonka's magical factory. The journey is filled with delightful surprises, curious characters, and, of course, an abundance of chocolate.

As Charlie navigates the factory, he encounters a cast of memorable figures, each representing a different aspect of childhood and its challenges. From the gluttonous Augustus Gloop to the spoiled Veruca Salt, the characters are vividly brought to life through engaging performances and catchy tunes. Each song not only enhances the narrative but also deepens the audience's connection to the characters.

In addition to its entertainment value, this adaptation carries important messages about kindness, humility, and the consequences of one's actions. Charlie's journey reminds us that true wealth comes from love and family rather than material possessions. The story encourages young audiences to value generosity and integrity over greed and entitlement.
