Free Summer Meals for Kids and Teens Return Across Central Texas Beginning June 1

Austin  /  Austin
May 29 2026

When the school year ends, summer often brings a welcome change of pace for children and families. But for many households across Central Texas, it can also mean the loss of reliable access to the free and reduced-price meals students receive during the school year.

Beginning June 1 and continuing through August 7, the Central Texas Food Bank, along with community partners throughout the region, is helping bridge that gap through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and other nutrition initiatives that provide free meals to children and teens ages 18 and younger.

The program serves families across Austin and numerous surrounding communities, offering both on-site meal locations and convenient take-home meal distribution sites in rural areas. No registration, proof of income, or identification is required for eligible children and teens.

Why This Matters for Central Texas Families

Summer meal programs play an important role in supporting children's health and well-being during the months when school cafeterias are closed. Access to nutritious meals can help children maintain healthy growth, stay active, and return to school better prepared for academic success in the fall.

For many working families, the program also helps ease household grocery costs during a season when food expenses often rise as children spend more time at home.

The Central Texas Food Bank, which serves a 21-county region, supports more than 610,000 food-insecure individuals annually through direct programs and partnerships with nearly 250 nonprofit organizations.

Flexible Meal Pickup Available in Rural Communities

One of the most significant features of this year's program is the continued availability of Rural Noncongregate meal sites, often referred to as "Meals To-Go."

Unlike traditional summer meal programs that require children to eat at a designated location, these sites allow parents and guardians to pick up meals and bring them home. The model is designed to reduce transportation barriers and scheduling challenges that can make accessing summer nutrition programs difficult in rural communities.

Children and teens ages 1 through 18 qualify for the program.

If a child is not present during pickup, parents or guardians must provide documentation showing the child's eligibility. Accepted documents include:

  • School enrollment letters or emails
  • Student report cards
  • School attendance records
  • Student ID cards
  • Birth certificates for children not yet enrolled in school

Communities Offering Meals-To-Go in Summer 2026

Take-home meal distribution sites will be available in communities throughout Central Texas, including Buda, Bastrop, Elgin, Del Valle, Creedmoor, Uhland, Evant, Gatesville, Lampasas, Kempner, La Grange, Cameron, Rockdale, Goldthwaite, Mullin, Groesbeck, Mexia, Lott, Marlin, and Harper.

Locations include public libraries, churches, community centers, parks, food pantries, and other trusted neighborhood gathering places.

What Parents Should Know

  • No proof of income is required.
  • Children and teens ages 18 and under are eligible.
  • Both rural pickup options and on-site meal programs are available.

For families navigating rising grocery costs, summer childcare expenses, and busy schedules, these programs provide an important community resource that helps ensure children continue receiving nutritious meals even when school is out.

Looking Ahead

As summer begins across Central Texas, the network of libraries, parks, churches, recreation centers, schools, and nonprofit organizations participating in the Summer Food Service Program demonstrates a shared commitment to supporting local families.

With meal sites stretching from Austin and Del Valle to Bastrop, Lampasas, Cameron, Goldthwaite, and beyond, thousands of children will have access to free, healthy meals throughout the summer months—helping them stay nourished, active, and ready for the year ahead.
