Free America250 Celebration at Camp Mabry to Bring Revolutionary War History to Life on July 4

Austin  /  Austin
June 17 2026

As communities across the nation prepare to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, Austin residents will have a chance to experience history in a uniquely Texas way this Independence Day.

The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry will host a free public America250 celebration on Saturday, July 4, featuring live patriotic music, Revolutionary War reenactors, a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, musket and cannon demonstrations, and complimentary birthday cake. The event offers families an opportunity to connect with the nation's founding story while exploring one of Central Texas' most distinctive historical attractions.

For many residents, the event is more than a Fourth of July gathering. It is a chance to experience history firsthand and reflect on the generations of Texans who have served their state and country over the past two and a half centuries.

Camp Mabry to Host America's 250th Birthday Celebration

The celebration begins at 12:40 p.m. with a performance by the internationally acclaimed 36th Infantry Division Band. At 1 p.m., visitors will hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence before Revolutionary War reenactors and members of the museum's Living History Detachment present the colors, fire musket volleys, and demonstrate period artillery.

The event is designed to bring the history of America's founding era to life while highlighting the role military service has played throughout the nation's history.

Following the ceremony, visitors can tour the museum and enjoy free birthday cake provided by the Texas Military Forces Historical Foundation. Bleacher seating will be available beneath Camp Mabry's iconic live oak trees, and parking is free.

Admission to both the celebration and the museum is free.

Why the Texas Military Forces Museum Is One of Austin's Hidden Gems

Located at 3038 W. 35th Street inside Camp Mabry, the Texas Military Forces Museum is one of the largest and most comprehensive military history museums in Texas.

The museum's 45,000 square feet of exhibits tell the story of Texas military service from 1823, when the first militia muster was held in Stephen F. Austin's colony, through the creation of the National Guard and into modern military operations.

Visitors can explore exhibits covering:

  • The Texas Revolution
  • The Texas Navy and Republic era
  • The Mexican-American War
  • Frontier military campaigns
  • The Civil War
  • The Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars
  • World War I
  • World War II
  • The Korean War
  • The Cold War
  • Peacekeeping missions
  • The Global War on Terror

Rather than relying solely on display cases, the museum uses authentic uniforms, weapons, equipment, photographs, films, music, personal artifacts, battle dioramas, and immersive full-scale environments to help visitors understand the experiences of the men and women who served.

The museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with outdoor exhibits accessible from dawn until dusk throughout the year.

Living History Programs Bring the Past Into the Present

One of the museum's most popular features is its Living History Detachment, a volunteer group dedicated to making military history accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages.

Throughout the year, living historians conduct battle reenactments, military demonstrations, educational programs, displays, and parades. Their presentations allow visitors to hear the sounds of historical weapons, see authentic military equipment in action, and gain a deeper appreciation for the realities of military service across different eras.

The detachment is especially known for portraying the famed 36th Infantry Division during World War II and the historic Texas Brigade of the Civil War era, though members also participate in World War I, Vietnam War, and other period events.

Annual programs at Camp Mabry include the popular Close Assault 1944 living history events held during Memorial Day and Veterans Day weekends, as well as the Texas Military Forces Open House and Muster Day celebration.

A Resource for History Enthusiasts and Researchers

Beyond its exhibits, the museum serves as an important historical resource for Texans researching military service records and family history.

Its archives contain thousands of original Texas National Guard documents dating from 1910 to the present, extensive military photograph collections, World War I service records, World War II files, and historical rosters from the 36th Infantry Division.

The museum's library and archives are available by appointment.

Important Visitor Information for July 4

Because the museum is located on an active military installation, visitors should plan ahead.

Adults age 18 and older must present a valid government-issued photo ID to enter Camp Mabry. Acceptable identification includes a state-issued driver's license or identification card, U.S. passport, military ID, military dependent or retiree ID, U.S. government-issued ID, or a U.S. visa.

Visitors must enter through the Maintenance Drive entrance off West 35th Street and complete the security screening process.

Those planning to visit the museum should arrive before 3 p.m., as the Visitor Control Center closes at that time and entry to Camp Mabry cannot be processed afterward.
