Ascension Seton Williamson Opens $230 Million Patient Tower as Williamson County Growth Drives Demand for Care

Austin  /  Austin
August 21 2026

For families across Williamson County, one of the region’s most visible signs of growth is not another subdivision or shopping center. It is happening inside the healthcare system residents depend on when a child is sick, a parent needs surgery or an emergency changes an ordinary day.

Ascension Seton Williamson has announced the opening of a new patient tower at its Round Rock hospital, a $230 million investment that significantly expands the campus’s ability to care for a county that has added tens of thousands of residents in just a few years.

The new tower will welcome its first patient Sept. 1, according to Ascension, bringing 96 new inpatient beds along with expanded cardiac, surgical, imaging and outpatient services.

For Williamson County residents, the expansion is ultimately about capacity: more hospital rooms, more places to perform surgery, more advanced diagnostic equipment and additional specialty care designed to keep patients closer to home.

Williamson County Growth Is Increasing the Need for Local Healthcare

The timing reflects the extraordinary growth unfolding across Williamson County and communities including Round Rock, Georgetown, Hutto, Taylor and the surrounding area.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates place Williamson County’s population at approximately 752,827 as of July 1, 2025, up 23.6% from the county’s 2020 population estimate base of 609,059.

That represents nearly 144,000 additional residents in about five years — growth that affects far more than roads, schools and housing. It also increases demand for emergency rooms, hospital beds, operating rooms, cardiovascular care, imaging and rehabilitation services.

Ascension Seton Williamson already serves as a regional hospital with 24-hour emergency care in Round Rock. The hospital is a Level II Trauma Center and provides specialty services that include cardiovascular, surgical, neurological, stroke, orthopedic and trauma care.

“Our doctors, nurses, and care teams are at the heart of our commitment to this community,” said Jamie Youssef, Ministry Market CEO, Ascension Texas. “The opening of this new tower empowers them to extend our Mission to even more families. As Central Texas expands, this facility ensures that everyone in our growing region continues to receive the compassionate, high-quality care they need, whenever and wherever they need it.”

What the New Ascension Seton Williamson Tower Adds

The expansion includes 96 new inpatient beds, with additional capacity intended to accommodate future growth as healthcare demand continues to change.

Ascension also added a 10-bed Clinical Decision Unit for patients who require observation and evaluation before doctors determine whether they can return home, need additional treatment or should be admitted to the hospital.

Other major additions include a new cardiac catheterization lab for specialized cardiovascular procedures and two new operating suites intended to expand surgical capacity and help reduce wait times.

Patients and physicians will also have access to additional CT, MRI and X-ray capabilities, increasing the hospital’s diagnostic imaging resources.

Outside the main patient tower, approximately 33,000 square feet are being added within the Medical Office Building. That space will support hospital-based outpatient departments including cardiac rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation and a lymphedema clinic, along with upgraded cardiology offices.

The project has been taking shape for more than a year. Ascension and construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie marked the tower’s structural “topping out” milestone in August 2025 as work continued on the broader Round Rock campus expansion.

Ascension Texas Has Served Central Texas for More Than a Century

The Williamson County project also fits within a much larger Ascension Texas healthcare network that has operated in the state for more than 120 years.

Ascension operates 13 hospitals and 222 sites of care and employs approximately 16,000 associates across Central Texas, according to the health system. Its Texas network includes Ascension Providence in Waco and Ascension Seton facilities throughout the Austin area.

Among those facilities are Dell Children’s Medical Center, which Ascension identifies as the region’s only comprehensive children’s hospital and pediatric Level I trauma center, and Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, the region’s only Level I trauma center for adults.

Ascension Seton also partners with Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, connecting clinical care with medical education and efforts focused on improving healthcare quality and value.

As a faith-based healthcare organization, Ascension says its mission includes providing compassionate care with particular attention to people living in poverty and other vulnerable populations. The organization reports providing an average of $540 million annually in charity care and community benefit across Central Texas.

That broader footprint matters in Williamson County because the Round Rock hospital is not operating in isolation. It is part of a regional network that can connect local patients with specialty, pediatric, trauma and academic medical resources across Central Texas when more advanced care is needed.

More Space for Patients — and the Teams Caring for Them

Hospital expansions are often measured in beds and square footage, but Ascension officials say another goal of the Williamson County project is improving the working environment for physicians, nurses and other caregivers.

The new spaces were designed to support collaboration, modernize technology and improve workflows so clinical teams can spend more of their time focused on patient care.

“This tower expansion is an investment in the future of healthcare delivery for our neighbors,” said Andrew Gnann, President of Ascension Seton Williamson. “Our goal was to create a space that does more than just add capacity; it creates a care environment that supports healing, dignity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. By expanding our facilities and modernizing our technology, we are ensuring that we can continue to provide care to the families of Williamson County for generations to come.”

For residents, that investment becomes most meaningful during moments when healthcare cannot wait. More surgical capacity may mean a shorter wait for a procedure. Additional imaging equipment can help physicians diagnose patients more efficiently. Expanded cardiac services can make sophisticated care available without requiring every patient to travel farther into the Austin metropolitan area.

And as more families make Williamson County home, keeping that care nearby becomes an increasingly important piece of the region’s infrastructure.

What Happens Next at Ascension Seton Williamson

The new patient tower is scheduled to begin caring for patients Sept. 1.

From there, its importance will likely grow alongside Williamson County itself. The tower has been designed with future healthcare demand in mind, giving Ascension Seton Williamson additional room to respond as communities surrounding Round Rock continue adding residents, employers, schools and homes.

For families who already live here — and the thousands more arriving each year — the expansion represents another piece of the infrastructure being built around Williamson County’s changing needs.
