For one September evening, Rob Fleming Park will trade its usual soundtrack of families, walkers and outdoor recreation for Shakespearean comedy as Shakespeare in the Park returns to The Woodlands on Saturday, September 26.

The free community event, hosted by The Woodlands Township, will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rob Fleming Park, located at 6055 Creekside Forest Drive, with a live performance of William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor beginning at 6 p.m. Points North Theatre Company will bring the comedy to the outdoor stage, continuing a local tradition that has made Shakespeare part of the community’s fall calendar for more than a decade.

A Woodlands Tradition Brings Shakespeare Outdoors

This year marks the 11th annual Shakespeare in the Park, a tradition dating to 2016. Over the years, local audiences have gathered for productions ranging from Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth to Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The outdoor format has helped turn works often associated with classrooms and formal theaters into a more relaxed community experience.

Points North Theatre Company, which grew out of Houston-based UpStage Theatre Inc., has made bringing live theatre to The Woodlands and the North Houston area a central part of its work. Its Shakespeare productions have become one of the company’s most recognizable community offerings.

A Look Into The Merry Wives of Windsor

This year’s production, The Merry Wives of Windsor, is one of Shakespeare’s most community-centered comedies. Set in Windsor, England, it follows Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, two friends who discover that Sir John Falstaff is trying to court them both. Instead of falling for his scheme, they team up to outwit him through a series of increasingly elaborate practical jokes.

Falstaff was already a familiar character to Shakespeare’s audiences from Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2. In The Merry Wives of Windsor, Shakespeare moves him out of the political world of the history plays and into a story built around marriage, friendship, jealousy, gossip and neighborhood life.

The play is believed to have been written in the late 1590s. A longstanding tradition says Queen Elizabeth I asked Shakespeare to write a story showing Falstaff in love, though scholars have never confirmed that account. First published in 1602, the comedy has endured for more than four centuries because of its quick wit, physical humor and recognizable social dynamics.

With its focus on ordinary people rather than kings and battlefields, The Merry Wives of Windsor is especially well suited to an outdoor community setting like Rob Fleming Park, where audiences can experience Shakespeare in a relaxed, approachable way.

What to Bring and Where to Park

Residents are encouraged to make themselves comfortable for the evening by bringing lawn chairs or blankets, along with friends and family. Concessions will be available for purchase during the event.

Free event parking will be available at Creekside Forest Elementary School, Risen Church North and the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center. Accessible parking will be available at Rob Fleming Park. Visitors should note that parking along Creekside Forest Drive is prohibited.
