For shoppers in The Woodlands and Spring, the new Sprouts Farmers Market at Panther Creek is officially more than another grocery opening. The store welcomed customers Sept. 12 at 4775 W Panther Creek Dr #400, The Woodlands, TX 77381, becoming the company’s 500th location nationwide — and it is also beginning a local food-rescue partnership that will send edible groceries that can no longer be sold to Houston Food Bank.

The opening gives residents another option for fresh produce, natural and organic groceries, prepared foods and specialty dietary products, but the Houston Food Bank connection adds a community component that extends beyond the checkout line. Through Sprouts’ Food Rescue program, food that remains edible and nutrient-rich but is no longer considered suitable for retail sale will be donated rather than discarded.

The Woodlands becomes home to Sprouts' 500th store

The Panther Creek location opened Saturday morning following a 6:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting, with doors opening at 7 a.m. Sprouts identified the store as its 500th location across 25 states, making The Woodlands part of a national milestone for the Phoenix-based specialty grocery chain.

The store occupies the former Randalls space in Panther Creek Village Center, returning a grocery use to a familiar neighborhood shopping destination. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing described the project as a 30,478-square-foot renovation of the existing building, with an estimated construction cost of about $3.46 million.

That reuse may be especially meaningful for nearby residents who have watched the former supermarket space sit vacant. Rather than adding another development on undeveloped land, Sprouts has brought a grocery anchor back to an established village center serving surrounding neighborhoods.

Houston Food Bank will receive rescued groceries

One of the most consequential pieces of the opening may happen largely out of shoppers' view.

Under the Sprouts Food Rescue program, the new The Woodlands store will donate groceries that are no longer sellable but remain safe to eat to Houston Food Bank. Sprouts uses the same food-rescue model at other Houston-area stores, creating a route for usable groceries to reach people facing food insecurity instead of entering the waste stream.

For residents searching for ways local businesses support Houston Food Bank or reduce food waste in The Woodlands and Spring, the partnership connects the new supermarket directly to a regional hunger-relief network. It also adds another source of donated food as Houston Food Bank works with community organizations throughout the Greater Houston area.

Texas farms will have a place on the shelves

The local connection also extends to some of the produce sold inside the store. Sprouts said it works with regional growers including J&B Farms and Little Bear Produce to source Texas-grown fruits and vegetables for its stores.

That sourcing fits the produce-centered format Sprouts has built its brand around. Fresh fruits and vegetables sit at the center of its stores, surrounded by meat and seafood, bakery and deli items, dairy and frozen foods, bulk products, vitamins, supplements and groceries geared toward a range of dietary preferences.

The Woodlands store is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, Suite 400, Spring, TX 77381, near Woodlands Parkway and Gosling Road. Sprouts' official Texas store directory now lists the location as open.

Another Sprouts is still planned farther east in Spring

The Panther Creek opening is one part of Sprouts' continuing expansion in the north Houston area. As My Neighborhood News previously reported, another Sprouts is planned as an anchor tenant at Grand Imperial Marketplace, a new retail development near Grand Parkway and Imperial Promenade Drive in Spring.

That future store is expected to serve growing neighborhoods along the Highway 99 corridor, while the newly opened Panther Creek location provides a more immediate grocery option for households in and around The Woodlands.

Together, the projects reflect the continuing movement of grocery and retail investment into north Houston's growing residential suburbs. But at Panther Creek, the story now goes beyond a new name on a storefront: an established grocery site is active again, a national retailer has marked its 500th location in the community, Texas growers have another outlet for their produce and edible food that cannot be sold has a path to families who can use it.
