Free School Supply Drive-Thru Coming to Elgin Aug. 9 for Local Families
Back-to-school season has a way of arriving all at once. One week, families are still settling into summer routines. The next, the shopping list is filled with notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons and everything else students need for the first day.
For Homestead Estates families who could use a little help checking off that list, the Elgin Juneteenth Organization is hosting a free Back-to-School Supply Drive-Thru Giveaway from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026 at Strait Gate Fellowship Baptist Church.
The church is located at 209 N. Avenue C in Elgin.
Families from Elgin and nearby communities are welcome, including residents of Homestead Estates, Manor, Bastrop, Coupland, McDade, Taylor and surrounding areas. School supplies will be handed out while they last, so arriving early may be a good idea.
A Simple Way to Help Students Start the Year Ready
The giveaway is meant to make the start of school a little easier for parents, grandparents and caregivers while helping students walk into class feeling prepared.
That support can matter. Even basic school supplies can become a sizable expense when families are also budgeting for new clothes, shoes, lunch items, transportation and other back-to-school needs.
Events like this give neighbors a practical way to support one another without making the process complicated. Families can drive through, pick up available supplies and continue with the rest of their evening.
Organizers are also asking community members to help spread the word to anyone who may benefit. A quick message to a neighbor, family member or friend could help make sure another local student starts the school year with what they need.
What Homestead Estates Families Need to Know
The free school supply giveaway will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, at Strait Gate Fellowship Baptist Church, 209 N. Avenue C, Elgin, TX 78621.
Supplies will be distributed through a drive-thru setup and will be available only while quantities last.
The event is sponsored by the Elgin Juneteenth Organization. Byron Mitchell serves as the organization’s president, and the host church is led by the Rev. Don G. Cyphers.
