Fort Bend County Officials Partner with Missouri City Juneteenth Foundation to Host Inaugural Community Honors Dinner
Fort Bend County officials, led by County Judge KP George and Precinct 2 Commissioner Grady Prestage, have joined forces with the Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation to host the inaugural Fort Bend County Juneteenth Community Honors Dinner, according to a release issued by officials. This significant event is set to take place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Landmark Community Center in Missouri City.
The partnership marks the continuation of a commitment to commemorating Juneteenth, with Judge George pioneering the first Countywide Juneteenth Recognition Ceremony in 2021. This inaugural Community Honors Dinner signifies a step forward in the recognition of the Juneteenth history and its implications in the community.
Established in 2002 under the leadership of Councilman Don Smith, the Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation seeks to emphasize and pay tribute to the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation, particularly in the context of the State of Texas. This proclamation symbolized the long-awaited promise of freedom for the enslaved population within the region, marking a pivotal moment in history.
Judge KP George expressed his pride in this partnership with the historic organization and Commissioner Prestage’s office: “We are proud to partner with this historic organization and Commissioner Prestage’s office to continue to ensure that the story of Juneteenth and the pledge of freedom it represents remain a vibrant and essential part of our collective history in Fort Bend.”
The Community Honors Dinner will feature music, dance performances, and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding community members. The honorees include Cynthia Lenton-Gary, recipient of the Trailblazer Award; Birdie Kelley, Community Champion of the Year; Dr. Gretchen Odion, awarded the Community Advocate Award; and Llarance and Dr. Cynthia Turner, who will receive the Civic Service Award.
The event is free and open to the public, extending an open invitation to join in the celebration and acknowledgement of the community's collective history.
