Fort Bend County Libraries Offer Free Teen Art Workshops Exploring Impressionism, Pop Art and More This Summer

May 08 2025

This summer, Fort Bend County Libraries are inviting teens to paint, learn, and connect with global art history through a new, free art workshop series for high school students. Timed with the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, the program—titled “Color Our World: Journey Through Global Art Forms”—gives teens entering grades 9 through 12 a hands-on opportunity to explore influential art movements from around the world.

Engaging Teens Through Creative Expression

The free art classes for teens are made possible by volunteers from Unite & Inspire, a nonprofit group promoting youth engagement through service and education. Each workshop focuses on a major art movement—Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Pop Art—offering both historical insight and artistic exploration.

Participants will learn about the origins and characteristics of each movement, then try their hand at recreating iconic works of art. All materials—including canvas, acrylic paints, and brushes—are provided free of charge, thanks to generous support from the Friends of the Library organizations.

With space limited, advance registration is required for each session to ensure every participant receives the needed supplies.

Explore Art Movements from Monet to Warhol

Each workshop centers around a famous piece of art, using it as a springboard for both education and creativity.

Impressionism

Focusing on Claude Monet’s Japanese Bridge Over a Pond (1899), this session explores how Impressionist artists like Monet, Renoir, and Degas captured fleeting moments of light and movement using short brushstrokes and vibrant colors.

Workshop Schedule (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

*Parking Note: At the University Branch Library, park in Visitor Lot 4 (gated), and validate your parking stub inside for free parking.

Post-Impressionism

Featuring Vincent van Gogh’s Vase with Irises Against a Yellow Background (1890), the Post-Impressionism workshop highlights a movement that built on Impressionism but emphasized symbolic content, bold colors, and more structured composition.

Workshop Schedule (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

Pop Art

Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) anchors the Pop Art sessions, where teens will discover how artists in the 1950s and 60s blurred the line between commercial culture and fine art, using bold colors and everyday imagery.

Workshop Schedule (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)
