Fort Bend County Libraries Expands Free Senior Programs with Workshops on Legal Resources, Financial Wellness and Property Protection
As Fort Bend County's population continues to grow and evolve, many older adults are looking for trusted resources to help them navigate important life decisions. Fort Bend County Libraries is working to meet that need through a series of free educational programs designed specifically for seniors, offering practical information on legal matters, financial wellness, and property protection.
The initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that older residents remain connected to reliable resources that can help them maintain independence, safeguard their finances, and make informed decisions. For seniors, caregivers, and family members alike, access to accurate information can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
Libraries Serving More Than Books
According to the American Library Association, older adults represent a significant and growing segment of library users nationwide. Libraries have increasingly expanded their role beyond traditional services by providing educational programming, technology assistance, and community connections tailored to the needs of aging populations.
Fort Bend County Libraries has embraced that approach through ongoing senior-friendly services and specialized workshops hosted throughout its library system. These programs aim to address real-world concerns while connecting residents with local experts and community resources.
June 16 Workshop Focuses on Legal and Community Resources for Seniors
The first upcoming workshop, "The Law Library, the County, and the Community: Issues and Resources for Our Senior Citizens," will take place on June 16 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at George Memorial Library in Richmond.
Presented by Fort Bend County Law Librarian Jonathan Briggs, the session will explore common legal and everyday challenges facing older adults. Participants will learn about available assistance through county services, community organizations, and the Fort Bend County Willie Melton Law Library.
Located inside the Fort Bend County Justice Center, the Willie Melton Law Library provides a variety of services beyond legal research materials, including printing, scanning, faxing, technology access, study spaces, and conference rooms. For many residents, these resources can serve as valuable tools when addressing legal questions or managing important personal matters.
Financial Wellness Workshop Scheduled for June 23
Money management remains a key concern for many seniors, particularly as living costs continue to rise. To help address those concerns, George Memorial Library will host "Financial Wellness and Budgeting for Seniors" on June 23 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
The workshop will cover budgeting strategies, debt management, saving for future needs, and protecting personal finances. Participants will also learn about practical financial tools and community resources designed to support long-term financial stability.
Both George Memorial Library workshops have a capacity of 20 participants and require advance registration.
Senior Series Continues with Property and Insurance Guidance
For mature homeowners and their families, understanding insurance coverage and protecting valuable assets can become increasingly important. Fort Bend County Libraries' ongoing Senior Series addresses these topics through conversations with local experts focused on housing-related issues.
The next Senior Series program, "Insurance Essentials: Protect Yourself & Your Property," is scheduled for July 17 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the University Branch Library in Sugar Land.
The presentation will be led by Liz McNeel, founder of the Houston Senior Living Institute, and will focus on helping seniors better understand insurance considerations that can affect their homes, property, and financial security. Unlike the George Memorial workshops, this event does not require registration and is open to the public.
Why These Programs Matter for Fort Bend County Families
While the workshops are designed with seniors in mind, the information often benefits entire families. Adult children helping aging parents, caregivers assisting loved ones, and homeowners planning for the future may all find value in the resources being shared.
As Fort Bend County continues to grow, programs like these help strengthen community connections by ensuring residents have access to trusted information close to home. Whether the topic is legal assistance, financial planning, or protecting property, Fort Bend County Libraries continues to serve as a community resource that extends well beyond its shelves.
