Fort Bend County Launches Mobile Pet Adoption Unit to Bring Shelter Pets Directly to the Community
For the first time ever, Fort Bend County Animal Services (FBCAS) is hitting the road with a brand-new Mobile Pet Adoption Unit—a custom-built, climate-controlled vehicle designed to bring adoptable pets straight to the heart of the community. The new initiative will make its debut on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch, located at 7631 Katy Fulshear Rd., Fulshear, TX 77441. The mobile unit will be onsite until 3:00 PM, with free snow cones provided by Kona Ice from 12:00 PM until the conclusion of the event.
The event marks a major step forward in Fort Bend County’s efforts to increase pet adoptions, alleviate shelter overcrowding, and extend access to animal care and services—particularly in underserved or remote areas.
“The unit is designed as a dynamic rolling extension of our brick-and-mortar shelter,” said Rene Vasquez, Director of Fort Bend County Animal Services. “By bringing the Mobile Pet Adoption Unit directly to schools, parks, and community events, we’re not just offering pets a greater chance at a new home—we’re delivering joy, hope and lifelong companionship right to the heart of our community.”

Fort Bend County Pets — Impact & Outcomes
Fort Bend County Animal Services continues to demonstrate a strong and compassionate approach to animal welfare, with July 2025 data highlighting its measurable impact.
In July 2025 alone, FBCAS took in a total of 557 animals, including 291 dogs and 266 cats. Despite the high intake, the department maintained an impressive overall live release rate of 96%, underscoring its commitment to lifesaving practices. Just 1.4% of dogs and 2.3% of cats were humanely euthanized, primarily due to severe illness, injury, or aggression concerns.
That same month, the department facilitated:
- 114 adoptions
- 170 returns to owner
- 130 animals transferred to rescue partners
- 41 community cats released through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return)
Since August 2018, Fort Bend County Animal Services has consistently maintained a 90% or higher live release rate, meeting national standards for a “no-kill” shelter. These efforts reflect the county’s deep-rooted mission to save lives, reduce shelter crowding, and provide second chances for pets who need them most.
Rolling Toward Hope: How the Mobile Unit Works
Fully outfitted by Magnum Mobile Specialty Vehicles and built on a 26-foot Ford E-450 chassis, the Mobile Pet Adoption Unit can transport up to 21 adoptable pets in comfort and safety. Glass-fronted enclosures allow visitors to see the animals before stepping inside, making it easy to connect with a future furry friend. With secure storage, veterinary-ready features, and built-in climate control, the unit also supports mobile vaccinations, microchipping, and pet wellness services.
Adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, ensuring a healthy start in their new homes.

A Lifesaving Initiative for Long-Stay and Overlooked Pets
This mobile approach is more than just convenient—it’s lifesaving. Animals that have been overlooked at the shelter due to age, breed, or length of stay now have a greater chance to be seen and loved by families who might never have visited the shelter in person.
Key benefits of the Mobile Pet Adoption Unit include:
- Increasing visibility for long-stay and overlooked pets
- Offering on-the-spot adoptions at local events
- Relieving overcrowding at the shelter
- Expanding outreach to communities with limited access
- Providing mobile veterinary services like microchipping and vaccinations
Affordable Adoptions and Public Education
Adoption fees remain accessible, typically ranging from $10 to $80, with waived or discounted pricing often available during community events. Fort Bend County Animal Services will also use the unit to host public education and community engagement programs, helping residents learn more about responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering, and how to support animal welfare in their area.
A Mission Rooted in Public Health and Compassion
Behind this bold new initiative is Fort Bend County Animal Services’ longstanding commitment to public safety, animal welfare, and community education. The agency works tirelessly to control the spread of rabies, manage wild and potentially dangerous animal populations, and ensure that all domestic animals are treated with dignity and respect.
In partnership with local rescue groups and foster homes, FBCAS gives lost and abandoned pets a second chance. The department also uses the latest technology to reunite pets with their owners and identify breeds and characteristics to improve adoption outcomes.
The Mobile Pet Adoption Unit is just the latest in a long list of innovations designed to improve outcomes for pets and families alike—and the team is inviting everyone to be part of the journey.
