Fort Bend County Implements C-V2X Technology to Enhance School Zone Safety Amid Rapid Growth
Fort Bend County has initiated the deployment of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology to enhance roadway safety around schools, marking a pioneering effort in the United States. This initiative involves equipping approximately 120 schools in the Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) and Fort Bend Independent School District (Fort Bend ISD) with C-V2X-enabled School Zone Safety Beacons and Pedestrian Crosswalks. These systems are designed to alert drivers to reduce speed or stop when students are present, thereby improving safety in school zones.
Innovative Approach to School Zone Safety
The School Zone Safety Beacons activate during student arrival and dismissal times, signaling drivers to slow down in designated school zones. Additionally, Pedestrian Crosswalks equipped with C-V2X technology notify drivers when students are crossing, prompting them to stop and ensure pedestrian safety. Motorists can receive these alerts through the Glance® TravelSafely smartphone app, enhancing driver awareness and compliance.
Brian Fields, Traffic Operations Supervisor for the Fort Bend County Road & Bridge Department, highlighted the challenges posed by personal technology distractions, stating, "From cell phones to dashboard screens, personal technology is drawing driver attention away from roadways. This has been especially challenging for transportation agencies in terms of driver compliance with school zones and yielding to pedestrians. When C-V2X became available, we knew it would be an opportunity to use the same technology to draw driver attention back to the roadways in these critical areas."

Addressing Growth in Katy ISD
Katy ISD has experienced significant growth in recent years. The district's student enrollment has grown by over 14,870 students, or 18.6%, in the past five years, more than any other school district in the Houston area during that time period. This rapid expansion highlights the need for enhanced infrastructure and safety measures to accommodate the increasing student population.
Future Plans for Lamar CISD
In addition to the current deployment, Fort Bend County plans to upgrade school zone beacons in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (Lamar CISD) in upcoming budget years. Lamar CISD has been identified as Texas's fastest-growing school district, with enrollment surpassing 46,800 students and projections indicating a rise to approximately 56,800 students within the next five years. This rapid growth further emphasizes the importance of implementing advanced safety technologies in school zones.
Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens commented on the district's expansion, stating, "As we experience unprecedented growth across Lamar CISD, it's clear that our commitment to quality education must grow with it. Our mission remains to ensure every student has the support, resources, and inspired leadership they need to thrive."
Fort Bend County's Commitment to Safety and Innovation
As the ninth-largest county in Texas, Fort Bend County has experienced significant residential and commercial growth, expanding from 8,600 business establishments to nearly 15,000 over the past decade. The implementation of C-V2X technology not only aims to enhance safety for students, parents, and school staff but also positions Fort Bend County as a leader in adopting innovative solutions to address the challenges associated with rapid development.
