For Fulshear residents, the businesses already lining local shopping centers, filling storefronts and serving families are a familiar part of everyday life. A new City of Fulshear initiative is aimed at helping more of those businesses remain successful as the community continues to grow.

The city has launched its Business Retention and Expansion Program, or BRE Program, to create a more direct line between existing Fulshear businesses and the city’s Economic Development team.

Rather than focusing solely on recruiting new companies to Fulshear, the program puts additional attention on the businesses that are already here — including those looking to expand, hire employees, make new investments or find their way through a challenge that could affect their future.

For residents, the effort could have a very local impact. Keeping established businesses healthy can help preserve neighborhood shopping and dining options, support local jobs and maintain the mix of independent businesses and services that residents use close to home.

A Direct Connection Between Fulshear Businesses and City Staff

Through the Business Retention and Expansion Program, Fulshear employers can meet one-on-one with the city’s Economic Development team and maintain ongoing communication as their needs change.

Those conversations are intended to give city staff a better understanding of what individual businesses are experiencing, including obstacles that may be limiting growth and plans that could lead to expansion or additional investment. 

The city says the program can help connect businesses with workforce, industry and business-support organizations; assist them in navigating city processes and development resources; and connect employers with financing, incentive or assistance programs when appropriate. 

It also gives business owners somewhere to start when they know they need help but may not know which agency, organization or program is the right fit.

Why Business Retention Matters in a Fast-Growing Community

Fulshear has experienced substantial residential and commercial growth, and new development continues to bring additional retailers, restaurants and services into the area.

But economic development is not only about what opens next.

Businesses that have already invested in Fulshear employ local workers, lease or own commercial property, serve nearby neighborhoods and contribute to the city's economic base. When those businesses are able to expand successfully, the benefit can include additional jobs and capital investment without requiring the community to start from scratch with a new employer.

That approach was already identified in the City of Fulshear's economic development planning. The city's strategic plan calls for maintaining relationships with existing businesses, identifying the challenges they face and connecting them with resources that can help them remain and grow in Fulshear. The plan also recognizes business retention and expansion as an important part of job creation and the local tax base. 

For residents, that can translate into something simpler: having more of the places they shop, eat, work and obtain services remain part of the community as Fulshear changes around them.

Program Could Help Identify Challenges Shared by Local Businesses

The program also gives the city an opportunity to look beyond the needs of a single company.

If several Fulshear businesses report similar problems — such as workforce shortages, difficulty navigating a process or a need for a particular type of assistance — those conversations can help economic development officials recognize broader trends.

Fulshear's economic development strategy specifically calls for identifying solutions to challenges shared across multiple businesses and tracking information gathered through business visits over time. 

That feedback can be especially useful in a community experiencing rapid growth. Needs that were manageable for a smaller commercial market can change as the number of employers, customers, developments and residents increases.

How Fulshear Business Owners Can Participate

The BRE Program is open to existing Fulshear businesses, including employers that are expanding, hiring, working through a challenge or planning for future growth.

Business owners can contact the City of Fulshear Economic Development team to request a confidential business visit. The city also offers a BRE survey and additional resources for entrepreneurs and small businesses through its Economic Development website.

Investing in the Businesses That Are Already Here

New businesses will continue to attract attention as Fulshear grows, particularly as commercial development follows the area's expanding population. The Business Retention and Expansion Program adds another piece to that economic development strategy by asking what existing businesses need in order to stay, invest and succeed.

For the restaurant owner considering a second location, the service business trying to hire additional employees or the longtime local company working through its next stage of growth, having a direct point of contact at City Hall could make navigating those decisions easier.

And for residents watching Fulshear evolve, helping locally established businesses remain part of that growth can help ensure the community does not simply add more places to shop and work, but also keeps many of the businesses that have already become part of life here.
