Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers Hosts Relief Drive for Hurricane Helene Victims

October 03 2024

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers, along with Sugar Land City Council Member William Ferguson, the Cajun Navy Ground Force and Sharon Leal of Reaching Out Fort Bend, is organizing a relief drive to support affected communities in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The hurricane, which made landfall on September 26, has claimed the lives of nearly 200 people, marking the second deadliest hurricane in the nation's history since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The aftermath of the catastrophic storm has left countless individuals and families in dire need of essential supplies as they begin the arduous process of rebuilding their lives.

Understanding the impact of such natural disasters, Houstonians are all too familiar with the challenges that arise in the aftermath of a storm. The resilience shown by communities coming together during tough times serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mutual support.

"Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by Hurricane Helene," Commissioner Meyers emphasized. "In the past, we've received support from other communities during our times of need, and now it's our opportunity to pay it forward. Every donation helps bring hope and relief to our neighbors in need."

Community members are encouraged to contribute non-perishable food items, including canned and dried goods, as well as baby food, formula, diapers, personal hygiene items, and cleaning supplies. It is important to note that bottled water is not needed at this time. Donations will be collected at Commissioner Meyers’ campaign headquarters located at 11345 Fountain Lake Drive in Stafford, next to Quizo’s, on Saturday, October 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All collected items will be personally delivered to hurricane victims in Florida by Councilman Ferguson, ensuring that every contribution makes its way to those in need.

As families across the affected regions begin to assess the damage and seek the means to recover, this drive serves as a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can lead to significant change. Together, with compassion and determination, the Fort Bend community is stepping up to offer hope and assistance to those rebuilding their lives after Hurricane Helene.
