Football History Made: Mayde Creek’s Kosi Okpala Becomes Houston’s Defensive Player of the Year
Mayde Creek High School senior Kosi Okpala has officially cemented his name in Houston high school football history. This week, surrounded by teammates, coaches, and proud family members, the standout defensive end was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Houston — the first time the award has gone to a player outside the Katy Tigers powerhouse program.
The milestone moment was first celebrated at a formal ceremony held at the Bayou City Event Center. But the true heart of the celebration took place Thursday morning at Mayde Creek High School, where the Rams football team gathered to honor one of their own. It wasn’t just about individual excellence — it was a recognition of how far the program, and the broader Katy ISD athletic community, has come.
“It’s a great feeling to reach an accomplishment like this,” said Okpala, who is also the District 19-6A Defensive MVP. “I want to thank my family, my coaches and my school staff. Most of all, I thank God for helping me get here.”

A four-star recruit and the No. 9 ranked pass rusher in the nation by 247 Sports, Okpala has been a force on the field throughout the 2025 season. His fierce tackles and unmatched work ethic earned him a scholarship to the University of Texas, where he’s set to join the Longhorns and compete in the SEC. He’ll begin his collegiate journey as early as January, having completed his graduation requirements early.
Mayde Creek Head Football Coach Mike Arogbonlo emphasized that Okpala’s recognition goes far beyond personal accolades.
“This is a huge deal, not just for our program but for the entire District,” Arogbonlo said. “We’re incredibly proud of Kosi and wanted to celebrate this moment together as a team.”
For a district where football runs deep — especially in Katy ISD — Okpala’s honor reflects the growing parity and strength of all its high school programs. His achievement spotlights a broader narrative: that excellence can rise from any corner of the community, and that Mayde Creek football is a team to watch.
As the community in Katy, Texas, continues to foster athletic talent across all its schools, Okpala’s story will serve as both an inspiration and a turning point. Not only did he break records — he broke barriers. And in doing so, he gave future Rams a legacy to believe in.
