Firethorne Trail Improvements Underway: Lake Firethorne Walking Paths to Receive Concrete Upgrades, Temporary Closures Expected Through Early 2027
The 1463 residents who regularly walk around Lake Firethorne or use the neighborhood's drainage trails will soon notice construction activity along some of their familiar routes. A project to replace existing unpaved pathways with permanent concrete trails is scheduled to begin in October, bringing accessibility improvements to several outdoor spaces throughout the community.
Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 151 (MUD 151) released an updated construction schedule on October 7, 2026, for its Existing Trail Enhancements Project, which will be completed in six phases to help minimize disruptions to neighborhood travel.
Demolition is anticipated to begin during the week of October 12 through October 16, with construction continuing through January 2027. Final project completion is currently estimated for February 2027.
While the improvements are intended to make the pathways more accessible for everyday use, residents should prepare for temporary trail closures as work progresses around Lake Firethorne and the District's drainage channels.
What's Changing Along Lake Firethorne and the Neighborhood Trails?
The Firethorne trail improvement project will replace existing unpaved sections around Lake Firethorne and neighborhood drainage channels with permanent, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-accessible concrete pathways.
For residents who use these trails for morning walks, exercise or outings with children, the improvements are intended to provide a more consistent walking surface. The upgraded pathways may also make it easier for people using strollers, wheelchairs and other mobility devices to navigate these portions of the neighborhood's trail system.
The work is focused on improving existing routes rather than developing new trail connections or recreational amenities.
These pathways are part of Firethorne's everyday outdoor spaces, giving neighbors opportunities to enjoy the lake, spend time outside and move through portions of the community on foot. The planned upgrades are intended to make those routes more accessible while maintaining the neighborhood's existing trail infrastructure.
Firethorne Trail Construction Schedule: Six Phases Through February 2027
According to the District's updated construction notice, work will proceed in six phases, beginning with trails around Lake Firethorne before progressing through additional detention trail sections.
| Construction Phase | Location | Expected Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Pond Trails, Lake Firethorne | October 2026 |
| Phase 2 | Detention Trails | October 2026 |
| Phase 3 | Detention Trails | October to November 2026 |
| Phase 4 | Detention Trails | November 2026 |
| Phase 5 | Detention Trails | November to December 2026 |
| Phase 6 | Detention Trails | December 2026 to January 2027 |
Estimated final project completion: February 2027.
The phased approach is intended to reduce disruptions while allowing crews to complete improvements in designated sections of the trail system.
Residents can view the District's updated phased construction map to see where work is planned and better understand which portions of the neighborhood will be affected throughout the project.
The published schedule is subject to change as construction progresses.
Firethorne Trail Closures: What Residents Need to Know
One of the most important details for residents is that active construction zones will be closed to pedestrian traffic during their respective phases.
Anyone who regularly walks, jogs or exercises along Lake Firethorne and the detention trails should anticipate temporary interruptions and may need to adjust their usual routes.
Fort Bend County MUD 151 is asking residents to observe posted construction signage and exercise caution near active work areas. The District's October 7 notice does not identify specific pedestrian detour routes or reopening dates for individual trail sections.
For families, dog walkers and residents who use these pathways daily, reviewing the construction map and watching for posted closures will be particularly helpful as crews move through the six phases.
The District plans to share additional information as construction advances through its official website and Fort Bend County MUD 151 Facebook page.
Although the work will temporarily affect access to some familiar neighborhood walking routes, the completed project is expected to provide more accessible, permanent pathways around Lake Firethorne and the surrounding drainage areas.
Residents are encouraged to share the construction schedule with neighbors who regularly use the trails and follow District announcements for any changes to the projected February 2027 completion date.
