Ensure Your Voice is Heard: How and Where to Register to Vote in Harris County Before the Deadline

October 07 2024

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Ann Harris Bennett is reminding eligible unregistered voters that today, Monday, October 7, 2024, is the final day to register to vote in the upcoming November 5 election. The deadline also applies to those needing to make corrections or updates to their existing voter registration records, including address or name changes.

Texas law mandates that eligible unregistered voters must register at least 30 days prior to the election day. To facilitate this process, the downtown Harris County Tax Office, located at 1001 Preston, will extend its hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to assist those who wish to register or update their voter registration records.

“My staff is out in the community conducting voter registration events and will work late in downtown Houston on Monday to ensure eligible unregistered voters have the opportunity to register before the state’s deadline,” said Bennett. She also encouraged registered voters to review their records to ensure their information is accurate before the deadline.

Individuals eligible to register to vote must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a resident of Harris County
  • Be at least 17 years and 10 months old (voters must be 18 on election day)
  • Not be a convicted felon (individuals may regain eligibility after completing their sentence, probation, and parole)
  • Not have been declared mentally incapacitated by a court.

In an effort to enhance voter participation and simplify the registration process, Bennett announced the relaunch of the #RegisterHarris initiative for the November 5 General Election. This initiative includes a feature that allows eligible voters to register via text. By texting #RegisterHarris to 281-720-3900, eligible unregistered voters can register and registered voters can check their registration status.

“With just a few taps on their smartphones, voters can leverage the power of mobile technology with this voting resource,” Bennett noted.

For those preferring to register through traditional methods, voter registration applications can be downloaded from www.hctax.net or obtained at U.S. Postal Offices, public libraries, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and various government offices.

For further assistance, voters may call 713-274-8200, with support available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese. It is important to note that any mailed registration applications must be postmarked by October 7, 2024, to be considered timely.
