Real-World Tech Experience: Tomball ISD Students Dive into Summer Internships with District Technology Team

June 25 2025

While many teens are soaking up the summer sun, a group of determined Tomball ISD high school students is diving headfirst into the inner workings of educational technology. These student interns—from Tomball High School and Tomball Memorial High School—have traded in traditional summer jobs for hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of information technology.

As part of a growing summer internship program, these students are working alongside the District’s Technology Services team, led by TISD Senior Computer Technician Tannia Osorio. Their days are filled with Chromebook repairs, network cabling projects, campus technology setups, and even computer lab installations. But the scope of their experience goes beyond hardware.

“These students are learning how to think critically, solve problems in real time, and communicate with staff—all essential skills for a career in technology,” Osorio explained. The internship is designed to expose students to real-world job responsibilities while nurturing soft skills like customer service, timekeeping, and personal accountability—traits that any employer would value.

The program is part of Tomball ISD’s commitment to work-based learning opportunities and aligns with the district’s vision that “students will lead in creating the future.” It’s more than just a summer gig—it’s a launchpad for students exploring career paths in information technology, engineering, and other technical fields.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity for our students to experience the realities of working in the information technology field and in most cases is their first job,” said Jason Piazza, Tomball ISD Director of Technology. “Members of our team have grown their skills through mentoring the students and providing leadership. Our team’s skill growth will be as impressive as the growth of our students through this experience.”

Piazza noted that this isn’t just a seasonal program. Tomball ISD plans to expand student participation throughout the academic year, offering more opportunities in areas such as software development and network operations. These ongoing experiences will continue to shape students’ understanding of the field—and possibly their futures.

“The goal for our student interns is to gain job skills that will benefit them in the future and provide exposure to the plentiful opportunities in technology-related fields,” Piazza added. “I have had the opportunity over the years to see former student technicians use this experience to choose information technology as their career but there are great benefits to students choosing engineering, or other technical fields as well.”

For a district invested in college and career readiness, the initiative is a tangible way to connect classroom learning to real-world application. And for the students who have stepped up to spend their summer behind the scenes instead of in front of a screen, it’s an invaluable step toward a future in technology.
