Elgin Veterans Day Parade Returns November 7 With New Evening Time, Downtown Celebration and Día de los Muertos Festivities

October 07 2026

For generations of military families, Veterans Day has been an opportunity to honor service, remember sacrifice and recognize the men and women who have worn the nation's uniform. This November, Elgin residents will have a chance to do just that as the annual Elgin Veterans Day Parade returns with a new schedule and a community celebration in the heart of downtown.

The 2026 Elgin Veterans Day Parade will take place Saturday, November 7, at 5 p.m. along North Main Street, bringing together veterans, military families, local organizations and neighbors for an evening dedicated to those who have served.

Organized by VFW Post 6115 Elgin and Scout Troop 473, this year's parade will look a little different. The event has moved from its traditional morning schedule to the evening, coinciding with Elgin's Día de los Muertos festivities and creating an opportunity for residents to enjoy multiple community celebrations downtown.

What to Expect at the 2026 Elgin Veterans Day Parade

The parade will begin at the intersection of Main and 11th streets, with local military veterans taking center stage as participants make their way through downtown Elgin.

Past parades have featured military vehicles, public safety personnel, high school teams, city officials and community organizations. One memorable tradition has been the sight of participants carrying a large American flag down Main Street, a reminder of the shared respect that brings residents together each year.

Following the parade, the Veterans Day celebration will continue in the grassy area along Central Avenue between Lo-Fi and McShan Barber Shop, where cake will be served.

Downtown vendors will also be part of the day's Día de los Muertos festivities, giving families an opportunity to spend time together while participating in two meaningful community traditions.

Local Businesses, Bands and Community Groups Invited to Participate

Organizers are encouraging local businesses, school groups, bands, youth organizations and other community members to join the 2026 parade.

Floats, decorated vehicles and walking groups are among the types of entries welcomed.

Those interested in participating or learning more about the event can contact Scout Troop 473 at 473troop@gmail.com.

Parade registration information is also available through VFW Post 6115. Completed forms and inquiries may be submitted through the following contacts:

Because the parade has moved to 5 p.m., participants should confirm updated check-in and lineup instructions with organizers rather than relying on previously published morning schedules.

Additional information is available through the VFW Post 6115 Elgin Veterans Day Parade event page.

Honoring the Veterans Who Call Elgin Home

For many residents, the Elgin Veterans Day Parade is more than a procession through downtown. It is an opportunity to recognize neighbors whose military service may not always be visible in everyday life.

U.S. Census Bureau figures cited in local event materials estimate that approximately 292 military veterans live within Elgin's city limits, while roughly 15 to 25 residents serve on active duty. These estimates offer a reminder that military service remains part of the community's story.

For some veterans, the parade is a joyful reunion with fellow service members. For others, it may bring memories of difficult experiences, lost friends or sacrifices that continue long after military service ends.

Both experiences deserve recognition.

By bringing veterans and residents together, the annual celebration gives younger generations an opportunity to better understand the meaning of Veterans Day while reminding those who served that their community remembers.
