For Elgin residents, a library card now reaches well beyond the shelves at 404 N. Main Street.

The Elgin Public Library has earned accreditation through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for 2026, officially making it a member of the Texas Library System. The recognition gives local patrons access to expanded borrowing options, statewide library services, digital research databases and resources that can support students, families, job seekers, business owners and lifelong learners.

While accreditation is an important achievement for the library team, its greatest value may be found in what it makes possible for the community.

More Books and Materials Through Interlibrary Loan

When a book, publication or other resource is not available at the Elgin Public Library, patrons may be able to request it through the statewide Interlibrary Loan program.

The service allows accredited libraries to borrow materials from other participating libraries across Texas, significantly expanding the number of titles available to Elgin readers without requiring the local library to own every item.

For residents researching a specialized topic, searching for a hard-to-find book or looking for materials beyond the local collection, interlibrary loan can help bring those resources closer to home.

Elgin Library Cards Can Open Doors Across Texas

Accreditation also connects Elgin Public Library patrons to the TexShare Card program, a reciprocal borrowing service involving participating libraries throughout the state.

Registered patrons may use a TexShare Card to check out eligible materials directly from other participating Texas libraries. The benefit can be especially useful for residents who travel, attend college, work in another community or regularly visit family elsewhere in the state.

Borrowing policies and available materials may vary by library, but the program gives Elgin cardholders another way to access books and other resources outside the city.

Online Databases Available Around the Clock

Through membership in the TexShare Consortium, Elgin Public Library patrons can also access a broad collection of online databases 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Those resources cover subjects including homework assistance, health information, business research, genealogy, literature, career preparation and consumer education. Available tools include Chilton Library, LearningExpress and Consumer Health resources.

For students completing assignments, residents preparing for professional exams, families researching health topics or community members exploring their family history, the databases provide reliable information that can be accessed from home.

The expanded digital access is particularly valuable for patrons who cannot always visit the library during regular operating hours.

Accreditation Creates New Funding Opportunities

Elgin Public Library’s accreditation also makes the facility eligible to pursue certain state and federal grants that can support technology, programs, equipment and other community services.

That eligibility includes access to E-Rate discounts that may cover up to 90% of qualifying internet costs. Savings on connectivity can help the library direct more of its available funding toward books, technology upgrades, educational programs and services for residents.

For taxpayers and library supporters, those outside funding opportunities can help local resources go further while supporting the library’s ability to adapt to changing community needs.
