Elgin ISD Back-to-School Safety: What Homestead Estates Drivers Need to Know Before Aug. 12
The return of school will quickly change the daily rhythm of Homestead Estates.
Elgin Independent School District begins the 2026-2027 school year Wednesday, Aug. 12. School buses, young pedestrians, parent vehicles and teenage drivers will return to local roads after the summer break.
Because Elgin ISD campuses use several different schedules, residents should expect school traffic across most of the day.
Elgin ISD Hours Will Create Several Traffic Waves
Booker T. Washington, Neidig and Trinity Ranch elementary schools operate from 7:30 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
Elgin and Harvest Ridge elementary schools operate from 7:25 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Elgin Intermediate School operates from 8:15 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
Elgin Middle School operates from 8:25 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Elgin High School operates from 9 a.m. to 4:35 p.m.
Phoenix High School operates from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while the district’s DAEP operates from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For Homestead Estates, traffic will begin with elementary routes and continue through Elgin High School dismissal during the evening commute.
When Must Texas Drivers Stop for a School Bus?
Texas motorists must stop when approaching a school bus with flashing red lights or an extended stop arm.
Drivers should remain stopped until the bus begins moving, the driver signals them forward or the warning signal turns off.
Yellow lights mean prepare to stop. Red lights mean stop completely.
Does Traffic in Both Directions Have to Stop?
Drivers traveling in both directions generally must stop on two-lane streets and undivided multilane roads.
The exception applies only when the bus is on another roadway separated by a physical median, barrier or intervening space.
Drivers should be particularly careful on larger roads and rural routes surrounding Elgin.
Walking and Biking Students Need More Space

Elgin High School dismisses at 4:35 p.m., placing student drivers on the road during the evening commute.
Teen drivers should maintain additional following distance, keep phones away and watch for younger students who may still be traveling on buses.

Elgin ISD’s transportation resources include 2026-2027 bus enrollment, a Find My Bus Stop tool and information about the district’s SMART Tag system.
Families should complete the enrollment process and verify the assigned route before the first day.
Parents should also ensure their residential and contact information is correct because route eligibility and stop assignments depend on district records.
