Torchy’s Tacos Brings Back Fan-Favorite Nookies After Two-Year Absence, Celebrating 20 Years of Austin Roots

Austin
October 29 2026

For longtime Torchy’s Tacos fans in Austin, a familiar dessert is finally making its way back to the table. After more than two years off the menu and thousands of requests from customers, the Austin-founded taco chain has officially brought back Nookies, its warm, deep-fried chocolate chip cookie dough bites that became a favorite among customers years ago.

The return gives Austin-area diners another reason to stop by their neighborhood Torchy’s, whether they have been ordering from the restaurant since its food trailer days or discovered its unconventional tacos more recently. And with the company celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, the comeback has a special connection to the city where it all began.

Announced October 29, 2026, the dessert's return is part of a series of menu updates that also includes new tacos, seasonal drinks and limited-time meal deals.

What Are Torchy’s Tacos Nookies, and Why Are They Back?

Originally introduced in 2008 as Lil' Nookies, the dessert became known for its combination of a golden, crispy exterior and a soft, warm chocolate chip cookie dough center.

Now, the recipe has received a small update. The returning Nookies are finished with cinnamon sugar, adding another layer of sweetness to the fried cookie dough bites.

According to Torchy’s, the decision to bring back the dessert followed thousands of requests through social media, guest emails and customer reviews. The company says those requests helped convince its culinary team to revisit a menu item that had been unavailable for more than two years.

"At Torchy's, we're always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what guests expect from our menu, whether that means introducing something completely new or bringing back a longtime favorite like Nookies and somehow making it even more delicious," said Paul Macaluso, chief executive officer of Torchy's Tacos. "The intersection of culinary creativity, craveable flavors and listening to our guests continues to shape our menu innovation."

Members of the Torchy’s Tacos Rewards program were given an opportunity to try Nookies before the public release, with exclusive access through a secret menu one week ahead of the official return.

From an Austin Food Trailer to Nearly 120 Restaurants Nationwide

For Austin residents, Torchy’s Tacos is more than another national restaurant chain. Its story began locally in 2006 with a food trailer, a little red Vespa and a goal of serving tacos that stood apart from traditional offerings.

What started as a small Austin food business gradually developed into a fast-casual restaurant brand with nearly 120 locations across the United States.

Over the past two decades, Torchy’s has built its reputation around creative taco combinations, scratch-made ingredients, its signature queso and a rotating selection of specialty menu items.

The company’s growth has also made Torchy’s a recognizable part of Austin’s restaurant history, particularly for residents who remember when the business was still finding its footing in the city’s food trailer scene.

Today, Austin-area Torchy’s Tacos restaurants continue serving customers throughout the region, including locations in Austin and nearby communities such as Round Rock and Cedar Park. The return of Nookies brings back a menu item from the company's earlier years for customers who remember ordering it, while introducing the dessert to diners who may never have tried it.

New November Menu Includes Rebel Yell Taco and Pineapple Margarita

Nookies are not the only addition to the Torchy’s menu this fall. The restaurant is also introducing two limited-time Taco and Drink of the Month selections for November 2026.

The November featured taco, called the Rebel Yell Taco, combines grilled shrimp, crispy bacon, cabbage slaw, jack cheese and guajillo fried onions. It is finished with smoky BBQ sauce and chipotle ranch, all served on a fresh flour tortilla.

For customers interested in the month's featured cocktail, Torchy’s is offering a Pineapple Margarita made with tequila, Grand Marnier, real pineapple puree and lime juice.

Both seasonal offerings are scheduled to be available throughout November, giving Austin-area customers a chance to try something new alongside the restaurant's regular menu.

Taco Two-Step Deal Available Through November 10

The Nookies announcement follows other changes influenced by customer requests.

Earlier in 2026, Torchy’s added nachos to its menu for the first time after years of guest demand. The company also recently introduced Taco Two-Step, a limited-time meal deal created in response to customers looking for more value from combo meals.

The Taco Two-Step promotion is scheduled to run through November 10, 2026. Customers interested in trying the deal will need to visit before the promotion ends.

Together, the additions reflect an approach that combines returning favorites with new menu ideas, an important balance for a restaurant company that has expanded well beyond its Austin beginnings.

Where Can Austin-Area Residents Find Torchy’s Tacos?

With multiple Torchy’s Tacos locations throughout the Austin metropolitan area, residents have several options for visiting the restaurant, including locations serving downtown Austin, North Austin, South Austin and surrounding communities.

Customers can use the official Torchy’s Tacos website to find nearby restaurants, check current menus and review location information before visiting.

Those interested in earning rewards can also register for Torchy’s Tacos Rewards, which offers points redeemable for eligible food items, queso and other benefits, along with opportunities for exclusive early access to certain menu releases.

A Familiar Austin Favorite Returns During a Milestone Year

Twenty years after Torchy’s first began serving tacos from an Austin food trailer, the company is continuing to develop its menu while revisiting some of the items that helped build its following.

For customers who have spent years asking for Nookies to return, the latest announcement means a familiar dessert is available again. For newer customers, it is an opportunity to try something that became part of the restaurant's early identity.

As Torchy’s continues celebrating its 20th anniversary and introducing new menu offerings, Austin-area residents can expect more opportunities to see how the hometown brand balances its original favorites with new ideas.
