Elgin Flood Mitigation Work Closes Part of West Brenham Street for Two Weeks
For residents traveling through this part of Elgin, a temporary road closure means a short-term change in how they get around. But the work happening beneath the street is part of a larger effort aimed at improving drainage and reducing flood risks in the community.
West Brenham Street is temporarily closed between Joe Sayers Street and Kennedy Street as contractors working on the Kennedy Street roadway project install sewer and stormwater infrastructure.
According to the City of Elgin, recent revisions to construction plans required a full closure of the roadway beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22. Project coordinator Larry Young Paving expects the closure to remain in place for approximately two weeks.
What Elgin Drivers and Homeowners Need to Know
The closure affects through-traffic on West Brenham Street between Joe Sayers Street and Kennedy Street, meaning drivers who normally use that stretch will need to take another route while construction is underway.
There is an important distinction for people who live along the affected section. Homeowners will continue to have full access to their homes during the closure, according to the city.
For nearby residents, the temporary disruption is connected to infrastructure that is largely out of sight once construction ends. Sewer and stormwater improvements are being installed as part of the broader Kennedy Street project, work intended to strengthen drainage infrastructure in an area where flood mitigation has become a focus.

The Kennedy Street construction is not an isolated road project. Grant funding has made roadway and drainage improvements possible along both Kennedy Street and County Line Road, according to the city.
Work on Elgin's flood mitigation projects began in April. The improvements combine roadway work with drainage infrastructure, addressing how stormwater moves through the area while crews make changes to the streets themselves.
For a growing community, drainage projects can have effects well beyond the construction zone. Stormwater infrastructure plays a role in protecting streets, homes and other property during heavy rainfall, making the work an important part of Elgin's longer-term infrastructure planning.
What Happens Next
The West Brenham Street closure is expected to last about two weeks, while the larger flood mitigation projects are anticipated to continue into late December.
Residents traveling near Kennedy Street, West Brenham Street and Joe Sayers Street should plan for the temporary through-traffic restriction while crews complete the sewer and stormwater installation. Those who live within the affected section will continue to be able to reach their homes.
For Elgin residents, the construction may be most noticeable right now because of the road closure. The longer-term story, however, is the infrastructure being put in place beneath and alongside the roadway as the city works through a broader series of drainage and flood mitigation improvements.
