Elgin Drivers Have Until October 30 to Comment on Proposed US 290 Extension
Homestead Estates residents who travel US 290 can review the proposed highway extension and submit comments through October 30. The virtual open house contains the initial design and an online comment form.
The approximately 15-mile study runs from SH 130 in Travis County to east of SH 95 South in Bastrop County. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and TxDOT are evaluating new tolled lanes alongside the existing free lanes.
What is proposed near Elgin?
The configuration description calls for two toll lanes and two non-tolled frontage-road lanes in each direction through the Elgin portion. Elevated toll lanes would pass over Roy Rivers Road, SH 95 North, Lee Dildy Boulevard/11th Street, Swenson Boulevard, Ochoa Street/Harris Street and the CapMetro railroad.
Existing signals would remain at several of those intersections, with new signals proposed at Swenson Boulevard. At Basket Flower Bend, the existing US 290 signal would be replaced with right-in/right-out access. These are proposed changes for public review.
How to weigh in
Review the plans, then identify the intersection, access point or design feature that affects your trip and explain the concern. Comments can be submitted online, emailed to 290extensionproject@ctrma.org, or left by voicemail at 512-265-6921. Mail comments to Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, ATTN: 290 Extension Project, 3300 N. IH-35, Suite 300, Austin, TX 78705.
Construction is not yet scheduled
The project remains in environmental study and schematic design. The project FAQ identifies environmental clearance as a prerequisite to later development and says no specific timeline has been set beyond that study. The review also considers property impacts, traffic noise, water resources and pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
