Elgin Adopts 2026-27 Budget, Sets New Property Tax Rate Ahead of Oct. 1
For Elgin homeowners, the city's newly adopted budget comes with a number that hits close to home: about $13 more per month in city property taxes for a home at the median value.
The Elgin City Council adopted the city's fiscal year 2026-27 budget on second reading Tuesday, Sept. 22, completing a months-long process that began in the spring. Council members approved a balanced budget and adopted a property tax rate of $0.675873 per $100 of property valuation, according to the City of Elgin. The new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
What Elgin Homeowners Could Pay
For a home with the city's cited median value of $277,963, Elgin officials estimate the new rate will result in an increase of approximately $157 per year, or about $13 per month. The actual change for an individual property owner will depend on that property's taxable value and other factors that determine the final tax bill.
That distinction matters for residents trying to understand what the Elgin property tax rate means for their household budget. The city's estimate provides a useful benchmark, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every homeowner's bill will rise by exactly the same amount.
The adopted rate also differs from the $0.719777 per $100 rate that had been proposed during the budget process. Earlier city notices used that proposed figure when outlining potential taxpayer impacts. The final rate approved by the City Council is $0.675873 per $100, according to the city's Sept. 23 announcement.
A Budget Process That Began in the Spring
For residents, the vote represents the end of the city's annual process of determining how Elgin will fund municipal operations in the coming fiscal year. City officials said work on the FY 2026-27 budget began in the spring, with adoption of the budget and tax rate serving as the final step before the Oct. 1 start of the new fiscal year.
The city's budget is more than an accounting document. It establishes the financial framework for local government services and operations during the year ahead. Under Elgin's governmental structure, the city manager is responsible for preparing and administering the annual budget and keeping the City Council informed about the city's financial position and departmental activities.
Where Residents Can Review the Elgin Budget
Elgin residents who want to dig deeper into the numbers will be able to review the adopted FY 2026-27 budget and property tax information through the city's Budget and Tax Rate webpage. As of Sept. 26, that page included the proposed FY 2026-27 budget, supplemental materials, updated budget pages and the city's notice regarding 2026 tax rates. The city said the final adopted budget and tax rate would be posted online in the coming week.
For homeowners and other taxpayers, those documents will provide a closer look at how Elgin plans to collect and spend public dollars during the year ahead. With the budget vote complete, attention now turns to Oct. 1, when the new fiscal year begins and the financial plan approved by the City Council takes effect.
