April 01 2026

For families across San Antonio looking to make Easter weekend more meaningful, memorable, and outdoors-focused, the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is offering something many residents wait for each year—a chance to stay overnight in some of the city’s most beloved parks.

From Thursday, April 2 through Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, the city will temporarily lift park curfews at select locations, opening the door for overnight camping, late-night gatherings, and multigenerational celebrations under the stars. For many local families, this tradition has become more than just a holiday activity—it’s a way to reconnect with nature, spend intentional time together, and create lasting memories right in the heart of San Antonio.

Why This Matters for San Antonio Families

In San Antonio, opportunities for safe, accessible outdoor experiences are increasingly valuable. Events like Easter camping provide residents with a low-cost, close-to-home way to unplug, reduce stress, and strengthen family connections.

According to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), access to local parks and outdoor recreation is directly linked to improved mental health, stronger communities, and increased physical activity. For families who may not travel during holidays, this initiative creates an inclusive way to celebrate Easter locally.

Keeping Parks Clean: Trash and Recycling Expectations

With increased park usage comes shared responsibility. City officials are encouraging all visitors to help preserve San Antonio parks by planning ahead for waste disposal.

Visitors are urged to:

  • Bring their own trash bags
  • Dispose of food waste in designated trash cans
  • Use recycling bins for plastic bottles and aluminum cans
  • Avoid bringing glass containers, which are prohibited

Park Stewardship teams and volunteers will be on-site throughout the weekend, providing additional trash bags and promoting recycling efforts.

Easter BBQ Safety: What Residents Need to Know

For many families, Easter weekend camping includes grilling and outdoor cooking. The San Antonio Fire Department is reminding residents to prioritize fire safety while enjoying BBQ traditions.

  • Stay Attentive Around the Grill: Never leave a lit grill unattended, and keep children and pets at a safe distance. Grills remain hot for up to an hour after use.

  • Use Starter Fluids Carefully: Only use approved charcoal starter fluid—never add flammable liquids to an active fire. Safer alternatives like chimney starters are encouraged.

  • Know How to Handle Grease Fires: Water should never be used on grease fires. For gas grills, turn off the gas and close the lid if safe to do so, then call 911. For charcoal grills without lids, call emergency services immediately.

  • Dispose of Ashes Properly: Ashes should be fully cooled, dampened, and wrapped in heavy-duty aluminum foil before disposal. They should never be placed in recycling bins.

  • Dress Safely: Loose clothing, apron strings, and sleeves can easily catch fire. Residents are encouraged to dress appropriately when grilling.

Additional fire safety guidance is available through the San Antonio Fire Department’s FireSafeSA initiative.

A Chance to Give Back: Volunteer Opportunities This Easter

For those looking to make an impact while enjoying the holiday, the city is also promoting Easter weekend volunteer opportunities focused on litter pickup and park preservation.

These efforts not only help maintain the beauty of San Antonio parks but also reinforce a shared sense of community pride and responsibility—something that continues to define neighborhoods across the city.

What Happens Next: Planning Your Easter Weekend Outdoors

With warm temperatures expected to start the weekend before cooler conditions and increasing chances of rain and storms move in through Easter Sunday, San Antonio residents are encouraged to plan ahead and stay weather-aware:

  • Arrive early to secure a good camping spot, especially ahead of potential rain later in the weekend
  • Monitor local weather updates, as storm chances increase from Saturday into Easter Sunday
  • Pack essentials including water, lighting, rain gear, and waterproof storage for supplies
  • Secure tents and outdoor items in case of wind or storms
  • Review park-specific guidelines and have a backup plan if weather conditions change

For many, this annual curfew lift represents more than convenience—it reflects a city investing in community-centered traditions that bring people together.

As Easter weekend approaches, San Antonio’s parks are set to transform into gathering places filled with laughter, food, and connection—reminding residents that some of the best holiday memories are made close to home.
