East Montgomery County Convention Center Nears Major Milestone as Area’s Largest Event Venue Takes Shape in New Caney
A project years in the making is rapidly becoming one of the most visible symbols of growth in East Montgomery County.
Construction crews are making significant progress on the East Montgomery County Convention Center and Parking Structure in Valley Ranch Town Center, where a massive new event and conference destination is rising near the intersection of Interstate 69 and the Grand Parkway (SH 99) in New Caney. Once complete, local leaders believe the development could transform how the region attracts business investment, large-scale events, tourism and entertainment opportunities.
The East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) says the project is steadily moving toward completion, with the exterior of the convention center nearly finished and interior buildout work now taking shape. The attached parking garage is also entering its final stages.
“Construction on the EMC Convention Center is making exciting progress, and we’re getting closer every day to bringing a brand-new space for events, gatherings and community connections,” EMCID shared in an April 23, 2026 social media update. “We can’t wait to open the doors and welcome our community into this incredible new event space!”
Located at 21654 Valley Ranch Parkway in New Caney, the 210,070-square-foot East Montgomery County Convention Center is being built alongside a 292,156-square-foot parking structure at 21612 Valley Ranch Parkway. Together, the development spans more than 502,000 square feet on approximately 7 acres in Montgomery County.
Site preparation and early construction activity began in late January 2025, with the project officially breaking ground March 10, 2025. Construction is expected to conclude in November 2026, with current estimates placing the cost of the development at approximately $133 million.
A Long-Term Investment in East Montgomery County’s Future
For EMCID leaders, the convention center represents far more than a new building.
The project has been positioned as a strategic investment intended to help East Montgomery County compete for corporate relocations, conferences, regional tourism and higher-paying jobs while also creating a gathering space that residents can use close to home.
Back in April 2022, EMCID announced plans for what was then described as a proposed 200,000-square-foot conference and events center projected to create nearly $1.73 billion in economic impact over 30 years.
“The I-69/Grand Parkway corridor is absent of many key services that have held back our community’s growth for decades,” EMCID President and CEO Frank McCrady said at the time. “The idea is to create the critical pieces that make the greater Porter/New Caney area a destination for many, but more importantly, a place where locally all can work, shop, play, and even graduate at home.”
That vision has remained central as the project advanced from concept to construction.
EMCID leaders have repeatedly pointed to the rapid expansion of the Valley Ranch area, increasing accessibility created by the Grand Parkway and growing residential development throughout East Montgomery County as factors driving demand for a large-scale convention and entertainment venue.
Designed to Host Major Events, Sports and Community Gatherings
According to EMCID, the East Montgomery County Convention Center is designed to accommodate a wide variety of events that currently have limited venue options in the area.
Plans for the facility include:
- A nearly 55,000-square-foot ballroom and exhibition hall
- Nearly 20,000 square feet of meeting space
- More than 40,000 square feet of pre-function, lobby and outdoor courtyard areas
- Flexible room configurations for large and small events
- Space for a future connected full-service conference hotel
The facility is expected to host corporate conferences, trade shows, youth sporting events, consumer expos, galas, wedding receptions, proms, graduations and private gatherings.
Through modern design technology and adaptable layouts, EMCID says the venue will be capable of transitioning quickly between different event formats. The exhibition hall is designed to accommodate more than 6,000 attendees for large-scale gatherings and can also be divided into as many as seven smaller rooms for simultaneous events and meetings.
Two signature meeting rooms will feature elevated views overlooking portions of the Valley Ranch development and include terrace access connected to surrounding green space.
The attached parking garage will include more than 800 parking spaces, helping support high-capacity events while reducing parking strain in surrounding commercial areas.
Filling a Regional Gap Along the Grand Parkway Corridor
District officials say the project addresses a longstanding shortage of large-scale event space outside central Houston.
EMCID Board Chair Brenda Webb previously said the district’s existing Atrium Center — which contains about 15,000 square feet of leasable space — has consistently turned away larger events because of space limitations.
“Each time is a lost revenue opportunity for nearby restaurants and local hotels,” Webb said in 2022.
To evaluate feasibility, EMCID engaged Hunden Strategic Partners to conduct economic, tourism and demographic studies. The analysis concluded that the greater Houston region lacked enough affordable multi-use event facilities capable of serving organizations unable to host gatherings downtown because of hotel and venue costs.
Officials also believe the convention center’s location near Interstate 69, the Grand Parkway, Valley Ranch Town Center shopping and entertainment venues, and future hotel development gives the project a competitive advantage over many regional facilities.
Financing and Construction Team
In December 2024, EMCID announced the sale and delivery of more than $159 million in sales tax revenue bonds to fund construction of the convention center and attached parking garage.
The district confirmed the project is being designed by Helman Hurley Charvat Peacock/Architects, Inc., commonly known as HHCP Architects, while SpawGlass is serving as Construction Manager at Risk and overseeing construction operations.
EMCID also stated that several local subcontractors are participating in the project, something district leaders say helps keep economic activity circulating within the region during construction.
Economic Impact Could Extend Far Beyond the Venue
Beyond conventions and events, district leaders believe the East Montgomery County Convention Center could become a catalyst for broader economic development across East Montgomery County.
According to EMCID’s previously released projections, the project could generate:
- Nearly $1.73 billion in net new spending over 30 years
- Approximately $775 million in net new earnings
- More than 500 direct and indirect full-time equivalent jobs
- Roughly $35.1 million in sales, hotel and venue tax revenue
The district also expects the facility to support surrounding businesses including restaurants, hotels, retail centers and entertainment venues throughout the Valley Ranch area.
For residents, the project may ultimately mean fewer trips into downtown Houston for large events, expanded local entertainment options and increased visibility for the rapidly growing Porter-New Caney region.
What Happens Next
With structural work nearing completion and interior construction continuing, attention is beginning to shift toward the eventual opening timeline and future event programming.
While EMCID has not yet announced an official opening date, the project remains on track for completion in late 2026.
As construction continues, the East Montgomery County Convention Center is already emerging as one of the largest public investment projects in East Montgomery County’s recent history — and one many local leaders hope will shape the region’s identity and economic momentum for decades ahead.
