East Central ISD Honors Teachers of the Year for 2025–2026

February 06 2026

East Central Independent School District announced its 2025–2026 Campus Teachers of the Year on February 3, recognizing educators selected by their peers for their instructional excellence, leadership, and commitment to students. For Savannah Place residents, the announcement carries special meaning, as several of the honorees teach at schools zoned to the community—supporting local students and families every day.

Among the district-wide honorees, three educators serve campuses attended by Savannah Place students: Michelle Devally of Heritage Middle School, Anthony Sanchez of East Central High School, and Deonna Alvizo of Honor Elementary. Together, their work reflects the full student journey—from elementary foundations to middle school growth and high school readiness—anchored in East Central ISD’s “Leading the EC Way” framework.

Michelle Devally

Building Confidence and Connection at Heritage Middle School

Michelle Devally, a Social Studies Department Head and 8th-grade team lead at Heritage Middle School, was recognized for her leadership, data-driven instruction, and student-centered approach. Now in her third year at Heritage, Devally also serves as co-sponsor of the National Junior Honor Society and as a member of the campus Tier 1 Committee, helping ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

Her path to education was shaped by a belief instilled early in life.

“I never thought I was anything special until [my teacher] told me I was and explained I could do anything I put my mind to,” Devally shared.
In her classroom, growth is measured in many ways—academic progress, improved behavior, and emotional development. By using interim data, MAP Growth results, and formative assessments, Devally tailors instruction and celebrates progress at every level. Her leadership also extends beyond academics, including organizing community service projects such as donation drives that connect students to the broader San Antonio community.

Anthony Sanchez

Relationships, Rigor, and Real-World Readiness at East Central High School

At East Central High School, U.S. History teacher Anthony Sanchez was honored for his deep commitment to student relationships, high expectations, and inclusive classroom culture. In addition to teaching, Sanchez serves on the Tier 1 Committee and sponsors the Odyssey of the Mind program, which brings creativity, problem-solving, and community engagement to students.

His philosophy is rooted in affirmation and effort.

“I wanted to become a teacher so I could be the person who lets students know, without a doubt, that they are worth every second of effort I give,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez emphasizes student voice through strategies like anonymous “sticky note feedback,” allowing students to share concerns, suggestions, and reflections that directly inform instruction. His classes consistently achieve strong outcomes, with over 90% of students passing the U.S. History STAAR exam in recent years. Beyond the classroom, he mentors new teachers, greets students daily to build connection, and leads programs that strengthen school culture and belonging.

Deonna Alvizo

Leading With Purpose at Honor Elementary

At Honor Elementary, Deonna Alvizo was recognized for her service-driven leadership and dedication to building strong school–family partnerships. Alongside her classroom teaching, Alvizo coaches the school’s running club, co-sponsors the yearbook, serves as PTA Secretary, and participates in the Family Engagement Committee.

Her approach to education is rooted in service and community.

“Teaching grew from my desire to serve others with purpose, gratitude, and integrity while making a lasting impact on students’ lives,” Alvizo explained.

Alvizo’s classroom emphasizes ownership of learning, with students actively tracking progress through MAP Growth, interim assessments, and formative data. Her leadership extends campus-wide through programs that foster pride, wellness, and creativity, ensuring students feel seen, supported, and empowered both academically and personally.

Honoring Educators Who Shape the Savannah Place Student Experience

From elementary classrooms to high school hallways, these three educators exemplify the heart of East Central ISD—supporting students academically while nurturing confidence, character, and community connection. Their recognition as Campus Teachers of the Year highlights not only individual excellence, but also the strength of the schools serving Savannah Place families.

As Anthony Sanchez reflected on the broader purpose of his work: “At the end of the day, I believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn, and my role is to help bridge that gap so they can take that step forward.”

East Central ISD encourages families to learn more about all 2025–2026 Campus Teachers of the Year through the district’s official announcement, and Savannah Place residents can take pride in knowing their neighborhood schools are led by educators who go above and beyond for students every day.
