Dine with Purpose: Explore Katy ISD's Old Town Bistro This Fall

October 17 2024

The Old Town Bistro at Katy ISD's Miller Career & Technology Center is gearing up for a special series of openings this fall, inviting the community to enjoy a selection of delicious dishes prepared by its Culinary Arts students. On October 30 and 31, and November 6 and 7, the Bistro will serve breakfast and lunch, showcasing the skills that students have honed throughout their training. This initiative not only allows patrons to indulge in tasty treats but also supports local students in their educational endeavors.

The Culinary Arts program at Miller covers a comprehensive range of topics essential to the food service industry. Culinary students in grades 11 and 12 begin with concurrent courses such as "Culinary Arts" and "Foundations of Restaurant Management," which provide foundational skills and knowledge about the culinary industry.

In these courses, they learn safety and sanitation procedures before engaging in hands-on labs that utilize commercial-grade kitchen equipment. Skills taught include knife handling, sautéing, baking, grilling, and plate presentation. Once completed, 12th-grade students can enroll in the "Practicum in Culinary Arts," allowing them to apply their learning in a practical setting and prepare more complex dishes for service at the Bistro and for culinary competitions.

Guests at The Old Town Bistro can expect a varied menu featuring breakfast items such as breakfast tacos, empanadas, and sweet treats. For lunch, the Bistro will offer sandwiches, tacos, and other quick bites. Beverages include soft drinks and a range of made-to-order coffees like lattes, cappuccinos, and hot chocolate. The operating hours are set from 6:00 to 10:00 AM for breakfast and from 12:30 to 1:30 PM for lunch, making it convenient for visitors. The Bistro will accept cash, credit, and debit card payments, ensuring ease of transaction for all guests.

Looking Ahead

To make hosting holiday gatherings a little easier, culinary students at Miller will be offering Thanksgiving treats like pies and freshly baked rolls in November, followed by a selection of cakes, cookies and cookie decorating kits for Christmas.

All proceeds benefit the Culinary Arts Department at Miller. Be on the lookout for more details!

The Old Town Bistro is located at 1734 Katyland Drive, west of Rhodes Stadium. Parking is available on the east side of Miller, with access through the entrance beneath the Bistro’s awning. For inquiries, interested individuals can contact the Bistro directly at 281-237-7580 or via email at OldTownBistro@katyisd.org. The Bistro looks forward to welcoming the community and providing a unique dining experience while showcasing the talents of its Culinary Arts students.
