Derby Day Returns to Fort Bend County to Benefit Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship

April 01 2025

Fancy hats, festive boots, and the thrill of the Kentucky Derby are all coming together for a cause that goes far beyond the racetrack. Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship will host its 11th annual Derby Day Party on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Houston Marriott Sugar Land, bringing Southern charm, community spirit, and equine inspiration under one roof—all to benefit individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.

The popular fundraising event, sponsored by Houston Methodist Hospital as the “Run for the Roses” Presenting Sponsor, begins at 3:30 p.m. and promises a full afternoon of Derby-themed fun, including a live viewing of the 151st Kentucky Derby, a seated dinner with open bar, the signature Mint Juleps, and the always-popular ladies’ hat and men’s boot contests. Guests can also participate in exciting live and silent auctions and try their luck by picking the winning horse for a chance to win a prize.

While the celebration is packed with energy and elegance, the heart of the event is Reining Strength’s mission: partnering with horses to help people realize their individual potential.

Healing Through Horses

Founded in 2014, Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Premier Accredited Center through PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International). The organization provides equine-assisted services (EAS) to children and adults facing challenges such as autism, cerebral palsy, PTSD, Down syndrome, developmental delays, and more.

“We’ve seen firsthand how powerful the human-horse connection can be,” said Heather Hernandez Sedillo, co-founder of Reining Strength. “It’s not just about riding—it’s about helping individuals build strength, confidence, and independence in a way that’s both effective and deeply meaningful.”

In 2024, the organization served more than 500 individuals across Fort Bend County and Greater Houston, offering personalized, safe, and evidence-based programming that meets—and often exceeds—industry standards for therapeutic horsemanship.

“Our participants come to us with a wide range of needs, and we work closely with each family to develop a customized plan,” said Sedillo. “Whether someone is learning to walk, manage anxiety, or strengthen communication skills, we’re here to support them every step of the way—with the help of our amazing horses.”

A Party with Purpose

Since its inception, Derby Day has become one of the most beloved spring events in Fort Bend County, drawing hundreds of supporters and community leaders who believe in Reining Strength’s mission. The event not only raises critical funds but also increases awareness of how equine-assisted services can transform lives.

“Derby Day is so much more than a fundraiser,” said Sedillo. “It’s a celebration of resilience, of community, and of the incredible ways horses can help us heal and grow.”

Guests attending this year’s event can expect a dynamic experience that blends entertainment with impact. Funds raised go directly toward covering the cost of therapy services, horse care, and facility needs—ensuring that Reining Strength can continue offering high-quality care regardless of a participant’s financial situation.

“We never want cost to be a barrier,” Sedillo added. “Every sponsorship, every ticket, and every donation allows us to serve more individuals and reach more families in need.”
