Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin Ranks Among Nation’s Best in Six Pediatric Specialties, Bringing Top-Tier Care Closer to Central Texas Families

Austin
October 05 2026

For Central Texas parents facing a serious medical diagnosis for their child, having access to highly specialized care close to home can make an enormous difference. From newborns requiring intensive medical attention to children undergoing complex heart surgery, families throughout the Austin area have another reason to feel confident in the pediatric healthcare available in their own community.

Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin has earned national Top 50 rankings in six pediatric specialties in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, marking the fifth consecutive year the hospital has received national recognition.

Among the hospital’s achievements is its Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery program, which ranked No. 9 in the nation for the second consecutive year. The recognition places Dell Children’s among the country’s leading pediatric heart programs and reflects the continued expansion of specialized medical services available to families across Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Bastrop and surrounding Central Texas communities.

For families who might otherwise need to travel to Houston, Dallas or another major medical center for certain complex treatments, the continued growth of Dell Children’s represents an important development in local healthcare.

Dell Children’s Earns National Rankings in Six Pediatric Specialties

According to the hospital's September 15 announcement, Dell Children’s received recognition across six areas of pediatric medicine in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.

The nationally ranked specialties include:

  • Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery: No. 9 nationally
  • Neonatology: No. 21 nationally
  • Pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery: No. 21 nationally
  • Pediatric Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: No. 23 nationally
  • Pediatric Urology: No. 50 nationally
  • Pediatric & Adolescent Behavioral Health: Top 50 nationally

The rankings recognize specialized programs treating some of the most complicated medical conditions affecting infants, children and adolescents.

For Central Texas families, these specialties cover a wide range of healthcare needs, including congenital heart defects, premature births, neurological disorders, respiratory diseases, urological conditions and behavioral health challenges.

The recognition also reflects the hospital's efforts to recruit highly trained pediatric specialists and expand the advanced treatments available in the Austin area.

“We are proud of the extraordinary dedication our doctors, nurses, and associates show every day when treating children with complex conditions,” said Adam Messer, President of Dell Children’s. “Earning a place among the nation’s top pediatric programs highlights the high caliber of specialists we have brought to Austin. Above all, it gives local families confidence that high-quality, comprehensive care is available right in their community.”

Austin’s Dell Children’s Heart Program Ranks Among the Top 10 in the Nation

One of the most significant achievements in this year's rankings belongs to the hospital's Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery program.

Led by Dr. Charles Fraser Jr., a nationally recognized congenital heart surgeon and founder of the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, the program has grown considerably since its establishment in 2018.

Under Fraser's leadership, Dell Children’s has developed advanced capabilities for treating children born with complex heart conditions, including those requiring highly specialized surgical procedures and heart transplantation.

Earlier in 2026, the program reached a major milestone, having performed more than 50 heart transplants since its inception.

For children with severe heart disease, a transplant can offer a critical treatment option when other medical or surgical interventions are no longer sufficient. The process also requires extensive coordination among surgeons, cardiologists, intensive care teams, transplant specialists and other healthcare professionals.

Having this level of care available in Austin can help reduce some of the additional challenges families face when a child requires prolonged hospitalization, frequent appointments or ongoing specialized treatment.

The program's No. 9 national ranking for the second consecutive year reflects its growing presence in pediatric cardiac medicine and the investment required to build a comprehensive heart care program in Central Texas.

Dell Children’s Medical Center: A Growing Pediatric Healthcare Resource in Austin

Dell Children’s Medical Center has become an important part of the Central Texas healthcare landscape since opening in 2007.

Located at 4900 Mueller Boulevard in Austin's Mueller neighborhood, the hospital is part of Ascension Seton and serves children and families throughout a broad region of Central Texas and beyond.

The hospital was established to provide comprehensive pediatric healthcare in a facility designed specifically around the medical, developmental and emotional needs of children.

Over the years, Dell Children’s has expanded its services to include advanced pediatric surgery, specialty medicine, emergency care, intensive care and treatment for children with medically complex conditions.

Its main Austin campus is also known for its environmentally conscious design. When the hospital opened, it became the first hospital in the world to receive LEED Platinum certification, reflecting an early commitment to sustainable healthcare facilities.

As the Austin metropolitan area has grown, so has the need for pediatric services that can support families across Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and neighboring counties.

That demand has contributed to continued investment in Dell Children’s facilities, specialized programs and physician recruitment.

In 2023, Dell Children’s expanded its regional presence with the opening of Dell Children’s Medical Center North in the North Austin area, providing additional pediatric hospital services for families in growing communities north of the city.

Together, these facilities are part of a broader effort to improve access to children's healthcare as Central Texas continues to develop.

Why National Pediatric Hospital Rankings Matter to Central Texas Families

The U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are designed to help families and healthcare providers identify hospitals with specialized experience in treating children with serious or complex medical conditions.

The rankings consider factors associated with pediatric specialty care, including clinical resources, patient outcomes and other measures of hospital performance. Methodologies vary by specialty, and national recognition does not mean one hospital is necessarily the best choice for every child's medical needs.

Still, for parents navigating an unfamiliar diagnosis, knowing that a nearby hospital has nationally recognized expertise can provide valuable information when discussing treatment options with their child's physician.

The importance extends beyond the hospital itself.

When children require advanced medical treatment, families often face practical challenges involving work schedules, transportation, childcare for siblings and extended stays away from home.

Access to specialized care within the Austin area can help some families remain closer to their existing support systems while their children receive treatment.

It can also strengthen the region's healthcare infrastructure as more families move into Central Texas communities.

For local residents, the continued development of pediatric specialty programs represents another aspect of the region's growth, one measured not only by new homes, schools and businesses, but also by the availability of essential medical services.

Community Support Helps Expand Specialized Pediatric Care

Behind Dell Children’s national recognition is a network of healthcare professionals, community supporters and philanthropic organizations working to expand the hospital's capabilities.

The hospital credits the generosity of Central Texas donors with helping recruit leading medical specialists, introduce advanced treatments and improve access to highly specialized pediatric healthcare.

Philanthropic support through the Dell Children’s Foundation helps fund programs, facilities and resources intended to meet the needs of children and families throughout the region.

That support is particularly important for pediatric healthcare, where specialized equipment, medical technology and highly trained clinical teams can require substantial long-term investment.

According to Dell Children’s, community contributions also support its mission of helping children receive necessary medical care regardless of their families' ability to pay.

For donors, volunteers and community partners, the latest rankings offer a measurable example of how years of investment in children's healthcare can contribute to the development of nationally recognized medical programs.

For families, those investments can translate into more treatment options and specialized expertise closer to home.

What’s Next for Dell Children’s and Pediatric Healthcare in Central Texas?

With six nationally ranked specialties and a heart program recognized among the country's Top 10, Dell Children’s enters the coming year with an established national profile and an expanding role in regional pediatric healthcare.

The hospital's continued growth will be particularly relevant as Central Texas communities experience changing healthcare needs, population growth and increased demand for specialized medical services.

Its national rankings also provide families with another resource when researching pediatric hospitals in Austin, children's heart surgery programs in Texas, neonatal intensive care, pediatric neurology and other specialized medical services.

Parents seeking care should consult their child's healthcare provider to determine which specialists, facilities and treatment options are most appropriate for their individual circumstances.

For the physicians, nurses and other medical professionals caring for children every day, the recognition reflects years of work building programs capable of treating increasingly complex conditions.

And for the families who depend on those services, the value of having advanced pediatric care nearby reaches well beyond a national ranking. It means more opportunities to seek specialized treatment while remaining connected to the people, schools, workplaces and communities that are part of their everyday lives.
