Cypress Woods High School Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcast Journalism

March 18 2025

For the second consecutive year, Cypress Woods High School Audio Video Production (AVP) students have been honored with a Gold Distinction in Broadcast Excellence at the prestigious National Student Television Network (STN) Conference. The event, held from March 1-4 in Tampa, Florida, brought together top student broadcasters from across the country to celebrate achievements in scholastic journalism and media production.

The Cy Woods AVP program received the honor for its monthly broadcast, CDub Today. Each submission was meticulously evaluated by seasoned professionals in the TV and film industry, using a rigorous rubric with a maximum score of 100 points. To achieve Gold Distinction, submissions had to earn a score between 90 and 100—a testament to the quality, creativity, and professionalism exhibited by Cypress Woods students.

Commitment to Excellence in Broadcast Journalism

“Achieving the gold standard last year was an incredible milestone, but this group of students were determined to prove it wasn’t a one-time achievement,” said Lori Andrade, Cypress Woods AVP teacher. “They have worked tirelessly to uphold the quality of our broadcast while pushing themselves to grow and innovate. Their dedication, creativity, and perseverance have truly set them apart.”

The STN competition is known for its high standards and emphasis on student-driven content. Under STN rules, all entries must be entirely student-produced, requiring teams to develop, shoot, edit, and present their work independently. This distinction not only recognizes technical expertise but also highlights storytelling ability and journalistic integrity.

A Meaningful Achievement on a National Stage

For the Cypress Woods AVP students, receiving the Gold Distinction was made even more special by the opportunity to attend the STN Convention in person and accept their award on stage.

“This year, we had the opportunity to attend the STN Convention and walk across the stage to receive the award, making the achievement even more meaningful,” Andrade shared. “Seeing their hard work recognized on such a big stage had an incredible impact on my students, reinforcing their passion for storytelling and commitment to excellence. I couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished.”

Fostering Future Media Professionals

The recognition from STN further solidifies Cypress Woods’ AVP program as one of the top scholastic broadcast programs in the nation. STN, a leading organization in student broadcast journalism, creative video, filmmaking, and media convergence, provides aspiring media professionals with the opportunity to develop real-world skills and showcase their work on a national platform.

By earning the Gold Distinction for a second year in a row, Cypress Woods students have demonstrated a consistent standard of excellence in broadcast journalism and video production. Their achievement not only brings pride to their school but also sets a high bar for future students who aim to follow in their footsteps.

With their commitment to innovation, storytelling, and journalistic integrity, the Cypress Woods AVP students continue to make their mark on the world of student media and beyond.
