Cypress Woods High School Boys Cross Country Wins District 16-6A Championship, Sending Wildcats to Regionals
A cross country team does not need the fastest individual runner to win a championship. Sometimes, the difference comes down to how well teammates finish together.
That was the story for the Cypress Woods High School boys cross country team on October 15, 2026, when the Wildcats won the District 16-6A Cross Country Championships at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.
With four runners finishing among the top 10, Cypress Woods earned 38 points to take first place, holding off Langham Creek High School, which finished second with 47 points.
The district championship gave Cypress Woods another reason to celebrate its student-athletes, with the Wildcats demonstrating how important depth and teamwork can be in a sport often decided by individual finishing times.
The school's girls program also had a standout performance, with junior Addison Rose finishing second in the District 16-6A girls race.
Cypress Woods Boys Claim District Championship With Four Top-10 Finishes
The Wildcats secured the District 16-6A boys team title with a 38-point performance, finishing nine points ahead of Langham Creek.
Cypress Creek High School placed third with 100 points.
Junior Landon Deas led Cypress Woods with a fourth-place finish, completing the race in 17:04.89.
Sophomore Christian Price followed in fifth place with a time of 17:09.27, giving the Wildcats two runners among the top five.
Another sophomore, Ryan Speedie, placed seventh in 17:24.88, while junior Bader Al-Hajrasi finished 10th with a time of 17:33.57.
Those four top-10 finishes helped put Cypress Woods in position to win the district championship.
The race's individual winner was Langham Creek senior Jacob Hope, who finished in 16:29.83. Jersey Village senior Michael Guerrero placed second in 16:45.74, while Langham Creek junior Daniel Payan finished third in 16:56.82.
Although Langham Creek claimed two of the top three individual positions, Cypress Woods earned the team championship through the combined finishes of its runners.
In cross country, the lowest score wins, and a team's first five finishers determine its score. That makes consistency throughout the lineup especially important.
For the Wildcats, the championship was a team effort, with Deas, Price, Speedie and Al-Hajrasi each contributing a top-10 finish.
Young Cypress Woods Runners Help Lead the Way
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Wildcats' district championship was the grade-level makeup of their top finishers.
All four Cypress Woods runners who placed among the top 10 were sophomores or juniors.
Deas and Al-Hajrasi are juniors, while Price and Speedie are sophomores.
Their performances helped secure the 2026 district title while also highlighting the experience the program could carry into future seasons.
For Cypress Woods families and supporters, seeing younger runners contribute to a championship is another reason to follow the program's development.
High school cross country requires athletes to balance individual goals with team responsibilities. A runner might be focused on improving a personal time, but where that runner finishes relative to competitors can make a significant difference in the final team standings.
That was especially apparent in the nine-point margin separating Cypress Woods from Langham Creek.
Every finishing position mattered, and the Wildcats' ability to place multiple runners near the front of the field proved decisive.
Cypress Woods Junior Addison Rose Finishes Second in Girls Race
The Cypress Woods girls program also had an impressive showing at the District 16-6A Championships.
Junior Addison Rose finished second overall with a time of 20:13.14, crossing the finish line less than three seconds behind individual district champion Alice Wallis of Cypress Falls High School.
Wallis won the race in 20:10.68, making the difference between first and second place just 2.46 seconds.
Rose's runner-up finish placed her among the district's leading female runners and earned her an opportunity to compete at the regional level.
The girls team championship went to Cypress Falls, which made school history by winning its first district title with 31 points.
Cy-Fair High School placed second with 59 points, and Langham Creek finished third with 69.
For Cypress Woods, Rose's performance added another individual accomplishment to a district championship meet that had already produced a boys team title.
Cypress Woods Among CFISD Schools Advancing to Regionals
The Wildcats' championship was part of a successful district meet for several Cypress-Fairbanks ISD programs.
In District 16-6A, Cypress Woods won the boys team title while Cypress Falls captured the girls championship.
In District 23-6A, Bridgeland High School swept the boys and girls team championships, extending its respective district title streaks to eight and nine consecutive years.
CFISD also reported a districtwide milestone for the 2026 season: for the first time, all 12 CFISD high schools had runners qualify for regional cross country competition.
The top three teams and 10 individual runners from each district race advanced to the regional championships.
The Region II-6A Cross Country Championships were scheduled for October 26 at Rolling Hills Soccer Complex in Fort Worth, while the Region III-7A Championships were scheduled for the same date at Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park in Huntsville.
For Cypress Woods, the boys team championship secured advancement to the next stage of competition, while Rose's individual finish added another Wildcat to the list of regional qualifiers.
What's Next for Cypress Woods Cross Country?
The Wildcats left Spring Creek Park with a district championship, several top-10 individual finishes and another opportunity to represent Cypress Woods High School beyond district competition.
The boys' victory was a reminder that successful cross country teams are built on more than one fast runner. The Wildcats won by having teammates finish close enough to one another to produce the district's lowest team score.
That kind of result takes preparation, consistency and a shared understanding that every runner has a role in the outcome.
For the Cypress Woods community, the 2026 District 16-6A championship is another accomplishment to celebrate as students, families and supporters follow the school's athletic programs.
With a championship-winning boys team and a girls runner finishing just seconds away from an individual district title, the Wildcats have given their school plenty to be proud of this cross country season.
