Cy Falls Senior Honored as Touchdown Club Football Scholar-Athlete Award Finalist
Cypress Falls High School senior Reid Meekins was named the third place finalist for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2023 High School Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Twenty-five finalists were recognized during the High School Football Scholar-Athlete Luncheon held Feb. 21 at the Bayou City Event Center.
Football coaches nominate one senior from their program and finalists are then selected by representatives from the offices of the presidents of the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Rice University and Houston Baptist University. Candidates are judged on athletic ability, academics and citizenship.
The Touchdown Club of Houston blends football enjoyment with community service, with members supporting teams at all levels. The club donates equipment to schools and awards scholarships to top players. The Touchdown Club of Houston has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships since 1999 to the top senior area high school football players who are considered starters with the highest grade-point averages. The organization coordinates events to raise funds including Awards Dinner, Sportsmanship Luncheon, and Touchdowner of the Year Award presentation.
“Reid is a special student athlete,” said Christopher Brister, Cypress Falls head football coach and athletic coordinator. “He has done so much for our school in the way of leadership as a member of our district Student Athlete Leadership Team as well as being the captain of two sports. Reid has impacted our school in many ways. He truly has maximized his opportunities at Cypress Falls by participating at a very high level in football, basketball, track and golf while maintaining an academic standing amongst the best in our school. He is deserving of the Houston Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete award and we are very proud of Reid.”
