CWC's Gifts for Bear Creek Meals on Wheels

December 14 2022

By Patricia Swagerty, Cy-Fair Women's Club

Every holiday season, the Cy-Fair Women’s Club (CWC)  selects a service project.  This year, it was holiday gifts for Meals on Wheels clients.  Members donated 152 throw blankets and delivered to the Bear Creek area Meals on Wheels.  The blankets were either wrapped or in a gift bag.  Socks, hard candies, snacks, or travel lotions were included.  Each gift bag was designated female, male, or unisex to assist program volunteers delivery.

Meals on Wheels is a nutritional program funded by Harris County Area Agency on Aging.  The program delivers hot, well-balanced to the doors of seniors and other neighbors who are homebound by disability or illness.  It helps participants maintain or improve their health, remain independent, and stay in their homes as long as possible.    Deliveries provide a few moments of conversation, a check on their clients’ well being, and something the clients look forward to.   During the holidays, Meals on Wheels provides a Hickory Farm type delivery to each of its clients but relies on donations for gifts to their clients.

Volunteers are key to the program.  The Bear Creek program needs 40 volunteers for each day.  In the summer, the Bear Creek program has a large number of volunteers.  After school starts, the number of volunteers drops to 20 volunteers, half of what is needed.
