Creech Elementary Celebrates 25 Years of Learning, Legacy, and Community

January 28 2025

For 25 years, Creech Elementary has been more than just a school—it has been a home for students, teachers, and families. This week, hundreds of "Creechers," both past and present, gathered to celebrate the school's anniversary, reminiscing about their time in its classrooms and honoring the people who helped shape its story.

Guests explored the school's history through memorabilia displays spanning the last quarter-century, sparking memories of friendships, favorite teachers, and defining moments. The evening was filled with laughter, nostalgia, and even a few happy tears as the Cosmic Chorale honor choir performed the newly composed school song.

“Our school truly is a family, and that starts with the family of our namesake, Betty Sue Creech,” said Principal Sally Gupton. “Her children have ensured that our students and staff know about her, and her values are embedded in everything we do.”

The event was attended by Creech’s daughter, Susan Stormer, along with Katy ISD Board President Victor Perez, Vice President Amy Thieme, Secretary Mary Ellen Cuzela, and board members Dawn Champagne and Rebecca Fox. Also present was John Paetow, the husband of the school's first principal, Patricia Paetow.

Betty Sue Creech spent nearly three decades teaching language arts and reading at Katy Junior High, where she was known for her kindness, patience, and ability to connect with every student. When the district opened its 19th elementary school in the 2000-2001 school year, naming it in her honor felt like a natural choice. Her passion for education continues to influence the school’s culture today.

For many attendees, the event was a reminder of the lasting relationships built within these walls. Parents recalled walking their children through the same hallways they once roamed as students, and longtime teachers reflected on the young lives they helped shape. More than just a milestone, the evening was a celebration of the friendships, lessons, and memories that will carry Creech Elementary into the next 25 years.
