Concerts, Holiday Shopping and More at The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts

October 02 2022

The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is a wonderful gathering spot for family and friends this holiday season, with festive concerts, unique gift items, an Art Market, Winter Family Day, and colorful exhibitions for guests of all ages.

Holiday Concerts

The Pearl will host two Pearlformance concerts this holiday season, on November 6 and December 11. Both concerts take place in the Main Gallery of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts, where guests will be surrounded by beautiful works of art.

Steinway artist and audience favorite, Don Irwin, will perform “Now and Then,” a solo piano concert on Sunday, November 6 at 4 p.m.  A classically trained musician, Don enjoys performing everything from Chopin to the Beatles, and Scott Joplin to Dave Brubeck. Because of his versatility, Don has worked with artists including Willie Nelson, Donna Summer, and Prince, as well as performing with pops orchestras throughout the country.

String trio AURORA

Tickets for “Now and Then” are $40 for members of the Pearl or $50 for non-members, and may be purchased by calling the museum at 281-376-6322.

Next, on Sunday, December 11, the string trio AURORA returns to the Pearl for a holiday concert at 4 p.m. The concert will feature Christmas music with Susanna Campbell on harp, Katie Beth Farrell on cello, and Allison Vitek on flute.

The three musicians have a strong rapport which translates beautifully on stage. Tickets for the AURORA holiday concert are $75 for members of the Pearl or $100 for non-members, which includes a reception with bar. Tickets may be purchased by calling the museum at 281-376-6322.

Art Market & Family Day

The Pearl will host an Art Market and Winter Family Day on Saturday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

The Art Market will feature work for sale by local artists, and coincides with The Dickens Market at Cypress Creek Christian Church, allowing shoppers to easily flow between the two. Families can also enjoy art activities, children’s entertainment, and the museum’s current exhibitions at the Pearl’s Winter Family Day.

“Three Excellences of Culture: Painting, Poetry and Music, the Work of Art Rosenbaum and Friends” continues at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts through January 14, 2023. Fall Exhibition: “Three Excellences of Culture: Painting, Poetry and Music, the Work of Art Rosenbaum and Friends”

This fall the Pearl is proud to present, in cooperation with the Linda Matney Gallery in Virginia, a colorful exhibition featuring the narrative painter Art Rosenbaum; his wife, professional photographer Margo Newmark Rosenbaum; and the friends and former students they met along the way.

Art Rosenbaum paints images of Southern folklore in richly colored canvases that depict lively figures often dancing or holding musical instruments. Rosenbaum’s paintings are in many collections, including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art. He also played a variety of folk instruments, and sought out old-time fiddlers, gospel singers, ring shouters and more, to record and preserve their music. His boxed set, Art of Field Recording Vol. 1: Fifty Years of American Traditional Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum won a Grammy for Best Documentary Recording in 2008.

As the Pearl was in the final stages of preparing this exhibition, Art Rosenbaum passed away on September 4, 2022, at the age of 83. His life has been celebrated in numerous publications since then, including The New York Times, The Guardian, American Songwriter and more. The Pearl is honored to be hosting this special exhibition of his work, with pieces and fellow artists that Art personally chose.

Three Excellences of Culture continues through January 14, 2023 at the Pearl. Other artists featured in the exhibition include Art’s wife, Margo Newmark Rosenbaum, Howard Finster, Len Jenkin, Michael Paxton, Bonnie Loggins, Dennis Harper, Kent Knowles, Scott Belville, Dilmus Hall and Teddy Johnson.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and admission is free. For more information, visit pearlmfa.org.

“The Pollinator Effect” features work by needle felt artist Ryan Lytle to explain the importance of pollinators and
their role in the ecosystem. This mural installation will be displayed at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts
through January 14, 2023.

The Pollinator Effect

The Pearl is also engaging hundreds of local students this fall to create an outdoor art display called, “The Pollinator Effect,” which integrates art and science.

Outside the museum, a replica of a beehive will be adorned with bumble bees and butterflies made from recycled materials by local children. Students from public, private and home schools are invited to participate, as well as Scout troops and other youth organizations. Inside the museum’s Cobb gallery, a mural installation featuring work by Virginia needle felt artist Ryan Lytle explains the importance of pollinators and their role in the ecosystem.

A local beekeeper will be at the Pearl on select Tuesdays this fall to talk with guests about types of bees, their life cycle, and bee keeping. The presentations are free but registration is required at pearlmfa.org.

Volunteers Needed!

Each year, thousands of local students visit the Pearl as part of school field trips, and volunteers are needed to assist with these and other presentations.

Volunteer docents provide guided tours at the Pearl to groups of all ages. Docents should have an interest in art and be available during the day. Training is provided for each new exhibition.

To learn more or volunteer, please contact Rebecca Howland at rebeccapfmfa@gmail.com or 281-376-6322.
