Cy-Fair Community Honors DPS Trooper Whose Split-Second Decision Near School Zone Prevented Potential Tragedy

In a moment where seconds mattered and lives were at risk, one Texas Department of Public Safety trooper made a decision that likely prevented a devastating outcome near two Cy-Fair area elementary schools. Now, that action is being recognized by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce and community leaders who say it reflects the kind of protection families depend on every day.

Trooper Lavan Shaanah was formally honored during the March 17, 2026 Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce luncheon, a gathering that regularly highlights local leadership and service. But this recognition carried particular weight—because it centered on a real-life situation that could have unfolded just outside neighborhood schools during dismissal.

A Dangerous Situation Close to Home

According to details submitted by Captain Carl Currie, the incident occurred on May 9, 2025, in North Harris County. A suspect driving a stolen vehicle led law enforcement on a dangerous pursuit, putting countless drivers at risk.

"Trooper Lavan Shaanah was assigned to a special security detail in North Harris County when he became aware of an active pursuit involving a stolen vehicle whose driver was operating in an extremely reckless manner by driving into oncoming traffic, forcing motorists off the roadway, and colliding with another vehicle while fleeing law enforcement," Currie stated.

As the situation escalated, the pursuit moved dangerously close to two elementary schools during afternoon dismissal—a time when buses, parents, and children fill nearby roads.

Recognizing the urgency, Trooper Shaanah acted when the suspect slowed behind a school bus. Using controlled contact with the vehicle, he safely ended the pursuit before further harm could occur.

"Trooper Shaanah’s swift actions prevented further risk to the public and exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, courage, and commitment to protecting the citizens of Texas," Currie added.

A Moment That Resonates With Cy-Fair Families

For many Cy-Fair residents, the story hits close to home. School zones are among the busiest—and most vulnerable—areas in any community. The idea that a reckless driver could have endangered children, parents, and school staff underscores just how critical fast, trained decision-making can be.

During the luncheon, presenter Tom Jackson connected the recognition to a broader legacy of service and sacrifice.

"On St. Patrick’s Day, everyone has a little green or orange or a bit of both," Jackson said, opening his remarks with a nod to the day’s significance.

He then tied that history to present-day service, noting, "Our honoree today, Trooper Lavan Shaanah with the Texas Department of Public Safety, has done the same."

Recognition Beyond the Moment

In addition to being honored by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce, Trooper Shaanah received the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Law Enforcement Medal and Certificate—an award that recognizes outstanding service, courage, and dedication to duty.

Other Texas Department of Public Safety personnel present were also recognized with Certificates of Appreciation for COVID Heroic Service, reflecting the broader commitment of first responders during challenging times.

The Sons of the American Revolution, an organization dedicated to honoring Revolutionary War patriots and promoting civic responsibility, continues to spotlight modern-day individuals who carry forward those same values of service and protection.

Why This Matters for Cy-Fair

For families across Cy-Fair and North Harris County, this recognition is more than ceremonial—it’s a reminder of the unseen decisions law enforcement officers make daily to keep communities safe.

Moments like these reinforce confidence in public safety, particularly in high-risk areas like school zones where the stakes are deeply personal. For parents, it’s about knowing that someone is watching out for their children during the most routine parts of the day—like getting on or off a school bus.

What Happens Next

While the incident itself is now behind the community, the recognition serves as an ongoing reminder of the importance of vigilance, training, and quick thinking in law enforcement. Community organizations like the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce and SAR continue to highlight these stories to ensure they are not forgotten.

As Cy-Fair continues to grow, so does the importance of strong partnerships between residents, local organizations, and public safety officials.
