Cy-Fair CERT Class 45 Graduates After Weeks of Hands-On Emergency Preparedness Training in Cypress

When disasters hit a community, the first person to help is often not a firefighter, paramedic, or police officer — it’s a neighbor.

That reality is exactly why dozens of residents across the Cypress and greater Cy-Fair area spent the spring learning how to respond during emergencies through the Cy-Fair Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. Now, after weeks of intensive hands-on training, Cy-Fair CERT Class 45 has officially completed the program and joined a growing network of trained community volunteers prepared to help when it matters most.

“That’s a wrap!” Cy-Fair CERT shared following the completion of the class’s final disaster drill. “CERT members from Class 45 successfully completed their final drill, putting all of their hard-earned skills into action — from search and rescue, transport, first aid, and triage, to teamwork and disaster response.”

The graduation marks the culmination of a spring training program that brought together residents from across northwest Harris County to learn critical emergency preparedness and disaster response skills. Hosted with support from the Cy-Fair Fire Department and held at Lone Star College–CyFair Emergency Services Education Center, the free FEMA-based program focused on preparing ordinary citizens for extraordinary situations.

Why CERT Training Matters in the Cy-Fair Community

For neighborhoods across Cypress, Bridgeland, Towne Lake, Fairfield, Copperfield, Coles Crossing, and surrounding communities, emergency preparedness has become increasingly important in recent years.

Severe weather events, hurricanes, flooding, power outages, and large-scale emergencies can quickly overwhelm first responders. During those first critical moments, trained neighbors can play a major role in helping stabilize situations until professional help arrives.

Cy-Fair CERT’s mission centers around one guiding principle: doing “the greatest good, for the greatest number of people.”

The program teaches residents how to remain calm under pressure, identify hazards, provide basic medical care, assist with search and rescue operations, and safely work together during emergencies. More importantly, it strengthens community resilience — the ability for neighborhoods to respond to and recover from disasters together.

For many participants, the program becomes about more than emergency response alone. It creates stronger neighborhood connections and gives residents confidence that they can help protect their families, friends, and communities during difficult situations.

From Fire Suppression to Medical Operations

Throughout the spring, Class 45 participants completed a series of increasingly realistic hands-on training exercises designed to simulate real-world emergencies.

Early in the course, trainees practiced fire suppression techniques under the guidance of the Cy-Fair Fire Department, learning how to safely extinguish small controlled fires while understanding scene safety and fire behavior.

“Our CERT trainees got hands-on experience in fire suppression,” Cy-Fair CERT shared during the training series. “It was an incredible opportunity to build confidence, practice new skills, and better prepare to serve our community in times of need.”

Participants also trained extensively in emergency medical operations, including bandaging, airway management, patient assessment, splinting, slings, and injury stabilization.

The medical training focused on practical skills that can make a significant difference during the critical minutes before emergency medical professionals arrive.

“Our CERT trainees rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on medical training,” organizers shared. “From practicing proper bandaging techniques to learning how to properly check airway on a patient, they gained valuable skills that could one day save lives.”

Search and Rescue Training Builds Teamwork

One of the most intensive portions of the course focused on search-and-rescue operations and teamwork under stressful conditions.

Trainees practiced grid search techniques used to locate missing individuals, evidence, or hazards in large outdoor spaces while learning how to systematically and safely cover terrain as a coordinated team.

The class also participated in nighttime building search exercises that simulated low-visibility emergency conditions.

“Team members geared up, worked together, and carefully searched a building in the dark, simulating real emergency conditions,” Cy-Fair CERT shared during one of the exercises. “Hands-on training like this helps prepare our volunteers to respond safely and effectively when our community needs them most.”

Additional exercises focused on patient transportation methods, teaching trainees how to safely move injured individuals using stretchers, blankets, chairs, and team lift techniques in situations where traditional emergency equipment may not immediately be available.

The drills emphasized communication, adaptability, and safety — all critical skills during disasters where conditions can rapidly change.

A Community Partnership Years in the Making

Cy-Fair CERT has been serving the region since 2007, helping train hundreds of volunteers throughout northwest Harris County.

The program operates in partnership with the Cy-Fair Fire Department, whose instructors and facilities help make the extensive hands-on training possible.

“A special thank you to Cy-Fair Fire Department for providing the incredible instructors and facilities that make this training possible,” the organization shared following the graduation exercise. “Welcome to the CERT family, Class 45!”

Programs like CERT have become increasingly valuable across the Houston area, particularly after disasters such as Hurricane Harvey demonstrated the importance of neighborhood-level preparedness and volunteer response efforts.

Emergency management experts often emphasize that resilient communities are built long before disasters occur — through training, preparation, and relationships between neighbors willing to help one another.

What Happens Next for CERT Graduates?

For many graduates, completing the course is only the beginning.

CERT volunteers often go on to assist with community events, emergency preparedness outreach, disaster response support, and public safety initiatives throughout the Cy-Fair area. Some continue their volunteer service with organizations such as the American Red Cross, Medical Reserve Corps, or local emergency management groups.

Others simply leave the program with something equally valuable: the confidence and knowledge to help protect their own neighborhoods and families during emergencies.

As hurricane season and severe weather threats remain an annual reality for Southeast Texas, programs like Cy-Fair CERT continue to play an important role in strengthening preparedness across the Cypress community. Learn more about Cy-Fair CERT at cyfaircert.org
