CFISD Fifth Grade Student Places in Top 20 at Scripps National Spelling Bee

June 06 2024

Wells Elementary School fifth grade student Vir Lagad placed 17th overall at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held May 26 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Before advancing to the national bee, Lagad won the 2024 CFISD Elementary School Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word nucleated in the ninth round. Lagad then placed third at the Houston Community College Regional Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the wordyagi in the ninth round.

“My experience on stage at the Scripps National Spelling Bee was exhilarating and nerve wracking,” Lagad said. “I hope I get to go back next year!”

More than 200 students from across the country and around the world competed in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Lagad was eliminated in the semifinal vocabulary round.

“Vir is an extremely talented and all-around great kid,” said Cheryl Fisher, Wells principal. “His classmates and our staff enjoyed cheering him on while we watched online! We continued to be impressed, but not surprised, that he went as far as he did. Anyone that knows him sees his determination, commitment and love of learning. It has been an honor to be a part of his educational journey at Wells and we are all excited to see what his future holds!”
