Celebrate 188th Anniversary of Texas Independence at the Birthplace of Texas
Mark your calendars for March 1st to commemorate the 188th anniversary of Texas Independence at the historic Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. Under the banner of "Independence Eve," this event will not only acknowledge the state's history but also offer diverse entertainment options for attendees.
A highlight of the evening will be a performance by Nashville recording artist, Glen Templeton. Known for his country tunes, Templeton will take to the stage at the outdoor amphitheater on the expansive 300-acre site. Preceding Templeton's performance, the opening band Drifters and Grifters will perform at 6:45, followed by Nite Moves at 8:00 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m., and admission to the concert is complimentary. Guests can make purchases from a selection of food, beer, and wine on offer.
For a more tailor-made experience, VIP Tickets are up for grabs at $75 per person. These tickets offer a fajita meal, two drink tickets, tent seating on the overlook, access to a private bartender and sales of premium liquor. Complementing these perks are access to a designated restroom, exclusive parking next to the Visitor Center, and option to mingle with Glen Templeton after the concert.
This year's Independence Day celebrations take a departure from tradition due to ongoing renovation projects at the park. In place of the usual vendors, performances, and extensive living history demonstrations, the festivities will take on a slightly different format. A Friday night concert will kick off the event, followed by a series of smaller activities on Saturday, making for a unique Texas Independence Day.
Saturday's activities span from an honorary event at Independence Hall to a chili cook-off competition by THC Sites from around the state. The Lone Star Chapter of the Sons of the Republic will also hold their annual ceremony at the amphitheater, complete with talks and a gun salute. The day seeks to honor the historic declaration of independence from Mexico, made by 59 signers 188 years ago, marking the birth of the Republic of Texas.
To make the experience more accessible to everyone, admission to the site's attractions, including Independence Hall and Barrington Plantation, along with parking, are free for the entire weekend. The full updated weekend schedule is available on the official website and Facebook page.
For this monumental event, the Washington on the Brazos Historical Foundation partners with the Texas Historical Commission, with contributions from sponsors like H-E-B, Washington County, City of Navasota, the Arts Council, Blue Bell Creameries, and Bluebonnet Electric Co-op. Washington on the Brazos, the birthplace of Texas, waits to welcome all to this grand celebration of history and culture.
