Bridgeland HS Choir Earns Runner-Up in Madrigal Choir Festival
Bridgeland High School’s chamber choir earned first runner-up at the prestigious American Classic Madrigal & Chamber Choir Festival, held Feb. 3-4 at the University United Methodist Church in San Antonio.
The Bridgeland chamber choir earned first runner-up after competing against choirs from across the state.
“The Madrigal Festival is a unique and incredible event that truly highlights the best of the best in choral music,” said Christopher Fiorini, Bridgeland head choir director. “To be named the first runner-up is a remarkable honor and one that is a testament to the hard work our students do on a daily basis.”
The Cypress Ranch High School chamber choir returned to the San Antonio contest to perform as the 2023 honor choir after earning first place in the 2022 competition.
“The honor concert was such a powerful and memorable experience for our students, and for me as well,” said Cynthia Douglas, Cypress Ranch head choir director. “The 30-minute concert took all year to prepare and polish, which demanded a great deal of maturity, stamina and focus for the signers. The audience at the Madrigal Festival, which is made up of all the students and directors who have competed, was by far the most energetic and positive audience we have ever sung for! It was a thrilling night and one we will never forget.”
The Cy-Fair, Cypress Park and Jersey Village high school choirs earned first division ratings and performance of distinction awards. The Cypress Creek, Cypress Lakes, Cypress Woods and Langham Creek high school choirs also earned first division ratings.
“The Madrigal Festival tradition by our choirs is strong,” said John Morrison, director of fine arts. “I’m very proud of our students and their teachers as they work daily to set the performance standard for others to strive for.”
As part of the American Classic Tours & Music Festivals, which specializes in domestic and international student performance tours, festivals and educational travel, the Madrigal & Chamber Festival is the company’s flagship event and combines singing, camaraderie, competition and education through clinicians. A panel of three judges evaluates each performance and provides ratings and written comments.
The top three choirs earn recognition in addition to judges naming “Performance of Distinction” awards for notable performances.
