Bexar County Elections Addresses DPS Voter Registration Backlog Ahead of Oct. 5 Deadline
With Texas' voter registration deadline approaching, Bexar County residents who recently registered or updated their information through the Texas Department of Public Safety have another reason to check their registration status.
Bexar County Elections issued a Sept. 23 notice addressing a DPS transaction backlog, placing the issue on the radar locally ahead of the Oct. 5 voter registration deadline. Elections Administrator Michele Carew said the department received a little over 45,000 DPS voter-registration transactions that had not fully transferred into the state’s TEAM system. Staff are reviewing every application and extending hours to update records before early voting begins. Voters on suspense status who submitted a new address through DPS will have their record updated and be removed from the suspense list.
Why the DPS Backlog Matters
Texas residents commonly encounter voter registration options while conducting driver's license business through DPS. A delay in transmitting or processing those transactions can create uncertainty for people who believed their registration information had already been submitted.
Bexar County's notice comes amid a broader issue affecting county voter registrars. In neighboring Travis County, for example, the voter registrar reported receiving approximately 32,000 DPS applications overnight on Sept. 23, illustrating the scale of delayed transactions being delivered to local offices.
For Bexar County voters, the practical takeaway is to verify rather than assume. Residents who recently registered, moved or changed information through DPS can check their voter registration status and contact Bexar County Elections if the information does not appear as expected.
Registration Deadline Is Oct. 5
The timing is important because Oct. 5 is the voter registration deadline referenced by election officials for the upcoming election. Processing a large influx of records also places additional work on county election staff as that deadline approaches.
The backlog does not mean every person who completed a voter registration transaction through DPS has a problem with their registration. It does make checking one's status a sensible step for residents who recently submitted or updated information.
